Make a holiday apartment in Santa Maria Coghinas your home away from home

The perfect place for a small family or couple to enjoy a relaxing break is a holiday apartment in Santa Maria Coghinas. The village is located in the north-west of Sardinia and while it is small, it is close enough to many of the area’s attractions to make it a great base for a stay on the sunny Italian island. Holiday apartments in Santa Maria Coghinas come with air conditioning to keep you comfortable in the midday heat and also have access to swimming pools. Most properties have BBQ facilities and are furnished to the highest standards to ensure an enjoyable stay.

Things to do

The village of Santa Maria Coghinas lies on the banks of the Coghinas River in northern Sardinia. It used to be part of the Giudicato of Torres, which was a de facto independent state from around the 9th to the 13th centuries. It then came under the rule of the Doria family from Genoa. The village and its municipality became autonomous in 1983.

-The Coghinas River is the defining feature of Santa Maria Coghinas. Here you can swim, fish, row or simply stroll along the river banks. There are several open areas where you can have a picnic, sit back and simply watch the river run before returning to your Santa Maria Coghinas holiday accommodation. The lovely countryside of the surrounding area provides plenty of opportunities for hiking, cycling, horse-riding and bird-watching. The river flows among hills and farmland with vineyards.

-Terme di Casteldoria is just a short walk up river and is one of the best places to revive aching limbs. These thermal baths have been popular since ancient times and it’s probably not without good reason that the Doria family built a castle here, which you can visit too. The baths are situated on the banks of the river so that you can alternate between soaking in the warm pools and taking a dip in the cool river water. Spa treatments are available too if you want some extra pampering.

-Valledoria is less than 4 miles from most holiday homes in Santa Maria Coghinas. Here the Coghinas River has formed a wetland area populated by a variety of birds. There is a good beach along the river banks too.

-Watersports are plentiful along the coastline in this part of Sardinia with sailing, windsurfing, water ski-ing and scuba diving on offer. Isola Rossa is only about 7 miles away, for instance, and is a popular spot for surfers and scuba divers alike.

-Castelsardo, a beautiful coastal town, is about 8 miles to the west. If you’re interested in history and archaeology, this medieval settlement is a must. Megalithic walls from before the Nuragic people lived on the island, nuraghe and medieval buildings like the Doria palace and castle are some of the historical sights in town. Castelsardo is also home to Elephant’s Rock, which has become a symbol of Sardinia.

Weather in Santa Maria Coghinas

Santa Maria Coghinas has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and rainy winters. Summer temperatures are slightly lower here than in many other Sardinian destinations, reaching a maximum of around 28 °C. In winter, things cool down but not too much: Minimum temperatures seldom drop much below 8 °C. Santa Maria Coghinas tends to be wetter than most parts of Sardinia and there may be the odd rainy day in summer. The wettest months are from September to May.

Getting to Santa Maria Coghinas

There are several ways to get to Santa Maria Coghinas holiday apartment. You can fly into either Alghero-Fertilia Airport, about 48 miles to the south-west, or Olbia Costa Smerelda Airport, which lies about 52 miles to the east. Both airports receive flights from a variety of European airports. Another option is to fly to Barcelona or Genoa and then travel by ferry to Porto Torres, about 30 miles to the south-west. You can then travel to Santa Maria Coghinas by bus or taxi but you’ll have more freedom to explore the surrounding areas if you hire a car.

Ein wunderschönes Haus mit sensationellem Ausblick

5 of 5

Beautiful and quiet spot for a holiday

5 of 5
Just returned from a lovely week at Villa Nuraghe. The villa is in an idyllic spot, very quiet and tranquil with only the faint, distant tinkle of cow bells to listen to. The local town of Perfugas has everything you need, both supermarkets are good, Crai is better if you want more recognisable brands but we used Eurospin mostly. The wine and cheese shops are a must! We also ate in the Pizzeria opposite Eurospin, fantastic pizza at a good price, takeaway and eat-in, but be warned they didn't take cards when we were there but there were plenty of cash points nearby. The beaches are lovely and we were often the only ones on them (we went mid sept so slightly out of season), our favourites were San Pietro and Badesi. The villa is spacious, the grounds extensive, you can find a shady or sunny spot somewhere whatever the time of day, also saw some lovely sunsets from the terrace. The villa and bedrooms stay very cool and the dining area outside is lovely, we BBQ'd most nights. The owner, Malcolm, has thought of everything in terms of facilities, utensils etc and was extremely helpful and responsive to any queries we had. For those that haven't been to Sardinia before it is vast! We took our bicycles and cycled most days. The villa is ideal for cyclists as there is plenty of secure storage and outside space, especially now that the additional accommodation is nearly complete. Sardinia is very hilly with little flat areas so you are up and down all day on some lovely sweeping roads. Some of the road surfaces were a bit bumpy but you just need to be selective about the road choices; the SS/SR roads seemed to be lovely smooth tarmac whereas the provincial SP roads were a bit more hit/miss. Nothing that Google maps/Street view cant help you with. The gradients are very consistent so less "rolling" than somewhere like Mallorca and some of the climbs are long but spectacular once you get to the top, especially around the wind farms. Generally we found the Italian drivers considerate although a little impatient at times but no worse than the UK and the roads are SO quiet once you get out of the towns that you barely see anyone else. The Sardinians are also a very friendly bunch & make you feel welcome everywhere. Our favourite cycle areas were around Castelsardo, Tergu, Badesi, Sedini, Nulvi, Tula and there is a really long (15km) climb from the lake at Tula up to Tempio which is a very scenic road and extremely quiet. All in all a fab 2 weeks!
