The central square is very attractive and is home to the collegiate church, which boasts a Gothic brick facade. In the interior you’ll be able to visit the crypt, which features frescoes by the Renaissance artist Lorenzo Salimbeni. Elsewhere you’ll be able to explore the streets of this charming medieval town, with its Romanesque churches and imposing defensive walls. These walls still have slits in place for archers and are accessible via walkways. You could also head for the civic museum here to find yet more art from the Renaissance period. A little way north of holiday accommodation in San Ginesio is the picturesque town of Tolentino. A highlight here is the magnificent Basilica, which contains what are considered some of the most impressive pieces of medieval art in the region, dating to the 1300s. You could also visit Parisani-Bezzo palace, which is where Pope Pius VI signed treaty of Tolentino in the late-18th Century after Napoleon invaded the Papal States. Just outside Tolentino, to the east, is the Castello della Rancia, a castle that was established in the 14th Century on the site of a former abbey. It has a long and fascinating history, having witnessed numerous conflicts, and today is open to the public.

Fabulous base for mountain walks

We loved coming to Susy's house again and we all left hoping that we would return. We still have Monte Vettore to climb (we tried, but the road to Forca do Presta was closed). Instead, we had a lovely walk up to the refugio above Pintura and then to Monte Rotunda with great views over the whole range and, beyond Vettore, to the Gran Sasso mountains. We loved swimming in Lake Fiastra, eating at La Concha and playing tennis at the charming Amandola club. The house is perfect, with different terraces to eat at depending on the need for shade or sun, a stunning view (even more so once you have climbed the hills you can see) and the wonderful Mike is there to help if you need any help or advice. A memorable holiday, thank you!
