Make a holiday rental home or villa in the Ragusa, Sicily your home away from home

Ragusa is simply jaw-droppingly beautiful. Having been destroyed by a huge earthquake in 1693, the whole town was rebuilt in a Baroque style, giving it a unique, unified style. The town clings to the side of a gorge, with houses, churches and palaces seemingly built on top of each other in a shambolic yet truly appealing style. Ragusa is off the beaten track in Sicily, which is a huge surprise, yet a real advantage for those who do travel to a Ragusa villa as the culture is completely untainted.

Things to do in the Ragusa, Sicily

Walking through the town upon your arrival is a real treat. The whole region has been placed on the UNESCO world Heritage area, with 18 specific buildings placed under protection by them. You will certainly be inspired by the brilliance and beauty of the town, especially when you discover the Basilica di San Giorgio, the Giardino Ibleo Gardens and the Cathedral of San Giovanni Battista.

The beaches that surround Ragusa are beautifully empty all year round. The lack of tourist crowds mean that the beaches are clean and secluded, perfect for lazy days in the sun. Tourist facilities are thin on the beaches, but if you want to go sailing or scuba diving, there are ample opportunities.

The secluded nature of the town has meant that the culture is quite unique to Ragusa. The dialect can be hard for even Italians to understand, and the dishes served in the restaurants, including panatigghie, a pastry filled with meat, cinnamon and cocoa, cannot be found anywhere else. If you are staying in a Ragusa villa, a tour of local restaurants is a fantastic experience, and if you are feeling adventurous, there are plenty of opportunities to take a recipe and re-create Ragusa cuisine in your own, self catering Ragusa accommodation.

Places to visit on holiday to Ragusa, Sicily

If you have the time during your holiday, a visit to the Aeolian Islands is well worth the effort. The islands are beautifully wild, with four active volcanic islands, some magnificent diving as well as a huge range of walking routes and beautiful beaches.

Weather in Ragusa, Sicily

Ragusa’s climate is exceptional. During the summer months, daily temperatures are rarely less than 32°C in the middle of the day, making a Ragusa villa with a pool a priceless asset. Temperatures remain blissfully warm long into the evening, allowing you to walk the atmospheric streets or picnic on the beach in the evenings.

Cheap flights to Ragusa, Sicily

Catania Airport (CTA) is located 100km from a holiday rental villa in Ragusa. Taking a hire car is advisable as Ragusa is very remote and secluded, but the journey is certainly worth it many times over. ThomsonFly provide direct flights to Catania from the Manchester (MAN) and London Gatwick (LGW).

Utterly stunning place, delightful hosts

5 of 5
The azienda complex is completely beautiful, if you want a relaxing home-based 'chilling' holiday these are the loveliest surroundings you could ask for. Even though there are a number of properties on the complex there are so many gorgeous secluded spots you pretty much feel like you've got the place to yourselves. If you do want to get out and about access is easy to very picturesque and historic nearby towns, and good beaches. We had a fabulous day out to the Cavagrande del Cassibile Nature Reserve, quite a drive and then quite a clamber down into the valley but well worth it, amazing views and beautiful waterfalls and rock pools to swim in. The villa itself was perfect for our needs, nothing grand but quirky and characterful, all spotlessly clean, basically equipped but if you needed anything else you only had to ask, and thoughtfully things were left like washing up liquid, cooking oil, soap, salt and pepper so you don't have to buy every single thing. And complete with gorgeous friendly cats who came visiting several times a day! Diego was a fantastic host, came out to fetch us on our arrival when we got lost driving in circles round Modica, then treated us to a delicious homemade lunch and local wine, and also breakfast the next day. He was always willing to help if needed, without being intrusive in any way. His recommendations for local restaurants were all great. We would also add Signola Ristorante Naturale which we discovered by accident - the best vegetarian/vegan cuisine we've ever had - which in Italy is saying something! Altogether a wonderful and authentic experience of Sicily, we hope to return, maybe for longer next time...

A spacious and well resourced apartment in a fantastic location, just steps from a clean sandy beach

Could not have been more pleased with this apartment perfectly located in the centre of this popular town. Everything is literally just a short stroll away - the beach, bars, coffee, gelato, pizzerias and excellent restaurants. What more could you want?
