This place is amazing!

5 of 5
My husband and I, along with our 13-months old daughter and my parents, arrived at Casa Cycas on Sunday 10th December 2016. When you look at pictures of your vacation destination you can't allways be sure if it really looks as shown. But this time it was even better then on the pictures - the villa is elegant, spacious, comfortable, very well equipped and in a beautiful setting. There are two double bedrooms, and a big salon with a seaview. The kitchen is small but fully equiped - there was even a bottle of wine waiting for us! The outside space is fantastic, with lovely views. Due to the weather (it was rather cold) we did not use the terrace in front of the villa but it must be a great experience during the warmer months. Aci Trezza was quite quiet at this time of year, but there were plenty of restaurants to choose from. And it is a good base for longer trips (Catania, Etna, Taormina etc.). All in all we enjoyed a very relaxing stay and will certainly be returning.

A house made special by its host... Ciao Antonio

5 of 5
Firstly I would like to thank Antonio, Marco and Santa who were welcoming, generous, helpful and fun. They live next door and were a shout away if we wanted them, but they never intruded unless we arranged it. If Antonio offers to cook for you, take him up on it.He is an excellent cook sourcing fresh food from Catania market and bringing local snacks and pastries. At the end of the week he added up the cost and I definitely feel he undercharged us. The house conforms to its description. It has a wonderful large bedroom leading out into a courtyard, the rest is spacious except a small. single bedroom, our children slept in the lounge. The house is tucked away in a quiet corner of Acireale, very few cars go by . There is a train line nearby ; the trains are almost all small (2 carriages) and infrequent. None of us were disturbed by them. We were able to park on the street near the house. Our car was in car hire terms a 'compact' This was too big for the fiendishly narrow streets and tight corners of Sicilian towns .Northern European rules do not apply to Sicilian driving but somehow everybody seems to get from A to B without incident. Acireale maintains some of its former elegance but mostly its crumbling like most of southern Italy. There are few tourists and the locals, to us were all friendly and helpful. Visiting Taormina it was a shock to be surrounded by thousands of tourists. The amphitheatre is breathtaking but the town was unbearable. The beach below Taormina is beautiful but you have to keep saying no to people wanting to sell you something. Acireale's local beach, Santa Maria La Scala is a stunning walk but it is more of a slipway for fishermen than something you would lie on. The best beaches we found were south of Catania. I liked Catania, my partner didn't; she was driving. Get the train. Etna calls but it is only worth going up if it is clear You get charged alot of money just to see 10 yards. We (including a 9 and 10 year old walked from the top of the cable car to the highest accessible point, its not challenging. We liked Sicily ; the locals are friendly, quieter than other Italians, there are lots to see and do near to a passable beach and there is chaos.

Lovely property in rural setting

4 of 5
Two lovely weeks spent in Dietroserra. The delightful owners live close-by and could not have been more attentive and helpful. Daughter-in-law, Maria, was ever on hand to provide English translation when needed. We felt very welcome. The website photos accurately depict the property and its rural setting. Tall trees overhang the property’s terrace, providing welcome respite in summer, but in late autumn when the sun is lower, the terrace is mostly in shade, making the interior of the property a little dark. Some extra, directional lighting would be useful in the kitchen/sitting area at times. For sun-lovers, a separate terrace provides beautiful views across the hillsides to Mount Etna; it’s shared with the other property, but comfortably large. For shade-lovers a lush, grassy area runs between Dietroserra and the shared terrace. Chairs, tables, sunbeds & cushions are plentiful. The swimming pool is of the tank variety which you climb up into, so not at ground level. It’s perfectly serviceable, but bear in mind with younger children. Furnished traditionally, the property is spotlessly clean, well maintained and well equipped, with lots of little extras thoughtfully provided (dish cloth; pan-scourer; washing-up liquid; initial roll of paper towel; liquid soap; shampoo; shower gel; loo paper; washing machine liquid). On arrival, we were treated to a bottle of wine from the vineyard and next day a delicious homemade cake arrived (thank you again, Signora Gae!). We also found fruit juice & water in the fridge, plus various condiments, olive oil, vinegar. When buying food, be aware there’s no microwave. We ate in often and found the hob and oven perfectly efficient. Toaster, kettle and filter coffee machine are also provided. Barking dogs didn’t worry us, but mosquitoes abound in October. Indoors was kept mozzie-free by using buzz plugs 24/7 (we took our own, but several were provided - bring tablets). Sufferers will want to apply lots of repellent or cover up when outside in the evenings. The location is good for exploring the east coast and volcano area. Viagrande is just 15 mins’ walk away, but note the route is not pedestrian-friendly. With no pavements until you reach town, you’re confined to the hard shoulder, which disappears in places. If you’re visible with light clothing/torch, most drivers will accommodate you, but it’s not for the faint-hearted. In all, those seeking peace and relaxation in a rural setting will love it!
