Prunetta, the village on the mountain pass.

Around the year 1.000 B.C., in the site where now there is the village of Prunetta, there was only woods and brambles (in Italian “pruni” from which the name of Prunetta). But the site was an important crossroad for wayfarers and merchants from Tuscan lands (governed by Medici family and subsequently by Grand Duke of Tuscany) to northern lands. During the years an ancient hospice rose on he pass, managed by the religious order of “Cavalieri Templari” to receive and to restore wayfarers. Subsequently was built the small church and, when the hospice was abandoned, with the stones of he fallen building were built, around the church, the houses of the village of Prunetta. Many of these houses were built in the 17th century.

The village, green and silent, surrounded by beech woods, maintain rhythms and calm of ancient woodcutters and shepherds who built it. For lovers of walking and cycling there are several walks in the shade of age-old trees both on asphalt and on paths.

Taking the road on right as you face of church, you can go along a fresh and picturesque way that, within 5 km., takes you to a group of houses called “Margine di Momigno” and then, on the right, after other 2 km, to the large meadows of “Macchia Antonini”. Here there is also a picturesque restaurant and a lake.

In the other direction from the village of Prunetta, the paths, always shadowed and pervaded by woods and fields fragrance, take walkers to Piteglio (6 Km.). This is a very interesting village, larger than Prunetta and very well preserved. It is set on the top of a hill and there is a splendid view over the mountains (covered in during winter and spring). Here there are steep country-roads and stone stairs where you can see the signs of ancient, rustic and mountain traditions.

Keeping on to “La Lima” and “Abetone”, after 3 or 4 Km. from Piteglio, a detour on left take to a riding track where you can have rides on horseback. Near the riding track there is an ancient stone Romanesque bridge on the river Lima. Very interesting!!

Still keeping on to “La Lima” on the left of the road you can see tourist signpost for “Ponte sospeso”. It is a very high steel bridge on the river. Spectacular!!!

The wonderful mountains of “Appennino Tosco Emiliano” offer marvellous views and interesting walks. On well signed paths you can easily reach the ridges of mountains, the pasture lands with cow herds and many mountains lakes as “Lago Scaffaiolo” reachable from the ancient village of “Cutigliano” and “Lago Nero” from the modern village and ski centre of “Abetone”.

In winter the green pasture lands change into ski tracks and the ski centres of “Abetone” and “Cimone” are the most important of Appennino.

Going out of Prunetta is very easy to arrive in Pistoia (20 minutes by car) and than, by motorway, to Florence (30 Km.), Siena (100 Km.), Lucca (25 Km.), Pisa (30 Km.) and to the Mediterranean Sea, to Versilia and Viareggio with his famous beach and nightclubs.

So, enjoy your Tuscan holiday with the red wine and the olive oil of Vinci, native country of the famous Leonardo (20 Km. from Pistoia).

Enjoy your holiday with the slow live of our mountains and with the green atmosphere of our silent woods.

Fabulous apartment, perfect location, fantastic hosts. You’ll want to return next year!

We spent the last four days of our holiday here and were delighted to discover a real gem. Kathy and Paul made us so welcome and supplied a really generous hamper which meant we could have a long lazy breakfast on our first morning, sitting on the wonderful private terrace looking at the mountains and listening to birdsong. Heaven. The apartment is beautifully finished with quality furnishings (the most comfortable bed we had in Italy!), excellent kitchen equipment and a really good shower in the stylish bathroom. Outside were two very comfortable loungers, table and chairs, bbq, and herbs and salad to pick. They’ve really thought of everything here! The olive trees were fantastic and the woodland with its stream was a good place to explore (listen out for the wild boar snuffling around at night on the other side of the fence!). Everything is so well kept. Kathy and Paul were really friendly and on hand should we have needed anything but they took great care to ensure we had our own space and privacy. Having moved here a few years ago they were very knowledgable about attractions, locally and further afield, and kindly made a reservation for us at an excellent local restaurant. The local town has two very good supermarkets and all the necessary shops that you’d need. We enjoyed Lucca, about 40 mins drive away, with its many traffic free squares and side streets and interesting shops and restaurants. A walk or cycle round the amazing ramparts is a must. A great base to explore this part of Tuscany, and equally easy to just stop, unwind and read whilst stretched out in the sunshine. Thank you Kathy and Paul - we’ll definitely see you again next year. Best wishes Sally and Richard
