Make a holiday rental apartment or villa in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy your home away from home

The ancient town of Porto Santo Stefano sits on the inside of a fantastically picturesque bay in the shadow of Mont Argentario in Tuscany, Italy. The village is a breath of fresh air on the Grosseto coast, a perfectly peaceful spot from which to swim, sail and fish in the warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Time seems to be completely irrelevant as you settle into a Porto Santo Stefano villa, and you shall see no rushing during your entire stay. Those looking for a truly romantic cliff-side cottage in Italy will find heaven in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy.

Things to do in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy

Porto Santo Stefano is the largest town on the Monte Argentario peninsula, and is home to many of the most important historical monuments found locally. The Rocca Spagnola fortress dominates the skyline, build in the 16th century and still hugely impressive. Now home to two contemporary art exhibitions, dedicated to the fishing fleets and archaeological heritage of the region, the fortress is well worth setting aside a few hours from a self catering Porto Santo Stefano villa. A walk along the seaside promenade, the Lungomare, is hugely worthwhile, with spectacular views, idyllic cafes and many market stalls selling the best of local crafts.

Santo Porto Stefano is known for its nautical heritage. Fishing is particularly popular (and exciting) from Santo Porto Stefano accommodation. There are a great range of opportunities to go fishing in the area, whether from the rocky shore, the golden beaches or from the side of a boat. Sailing is also hugely popular, and there are a handful of water sports centres from which you can arrange lessons, equipment hire and excursions for sailing, windsurfing, diving and water skiing. The great annual boat race, the Palio dell’Argentario on 15th August, sees the whole town spring into life, and is a day well worth staying in Porto Santo Stefano for.

The beaches of Porto Santo Stefano stretch for many miles around the inside of the bay. The beaches are thin, and swap from fine, golden sand to smooth rocks, which is the perfect conditions for swimming and snorkelling. The warm Mediterranean beaches are perfect for windsurfing too.

Places to visit on holiday in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy

Trips to the Island of Giglio are very popular, and leave from the Port in Porto Santo Stefano. The journey takes an hour, and the island is famous for its sensationally clear waters and the charming little village of Giglio Porto, into which the ferry arrives. The stunning island is a huge favourite with swimmers, scuba divers and anyone with a snorkel. Visits to the amazing Roman villa of Giannutro and the Giglio Castle are well worth exploration if you can drag yourself from the beaches of Arenella and Cannelle.

Travel to Porto Santo Stefano, Italy

Rome’s Fiumicino Airport (FCO), or the Rome Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino Airport to give it its full name, is the closest airport to a holiday rental in Porto Santo Stefano, although there is still 150km between the two. The airport is exceedingly well connected to the UK, with a huge range of flights arriving from around the whole of the UK. A hire car is strongly recommended during your stay in Porto Santo Stefano accommodation.

Fantastic!

5 of 5
We stayed 2 weeks in july 2017 in this beatiful house! We were 7 adults and the house is very spacious with 5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, a big livingroom and a big balcony with seaview. The house was very well equipped. The beach is 50 m from the house, nice beach with sunbeds, but quite narrow. The distance to citycenter of Porto Santo Stefano is approx 1,5 km, there were busses and also a footpath. Walking to city center was about 20-30 minutes. We had a fantastic stay in this house and would love to come back!

We were welcomed really nicely. And having arrived by train given walking beach and bus maps. It was thoroughly explained to us before booking that it wasn't ideal without a car as on a hill just out of the town which was kind BUT thankfully we still booked as the location was perfect for our family. Away from the noise of the port we could wake up to birds singing and cicadas. The climb was hot in the middle of the day but near the end we realised there was another free bus that stopped close by. The house is quite basic in decor but clean and spacious. We really hope to come again. If you are fit I recommend no car and walking and busing everywhere! Thanks to Daniela and Paolo. P.s.There are mosquito nets at the windows but little gaps under so still bring repellent if you are tasty to mosquitoes!!!!
