Make a holiday rental apartment or villa in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy your home away from home

The ancient town of Porto Santo Stefano sits on the inside of a fantastically picturesque bay in the shadow of Mont Argentario in Tuscany, Italy. The village is a breath of fresh air on the Grosseto coast, a perfectly peaceful spot from which to swim, sail and fish in the warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Time seems to be completely irrelevant as you settle into a Porto Santo Stefano villa, and you shall see no rushing during your entire stay. Those looking for a truly romantic cliff-side cottage in Italy will find heaven in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy.

Things to do in Porto Santo Stefano, Italy

Porto Santo Stefano is the largest town on the Monte Argentario peninsula, and is home to many of the most important historical monuments found locally. The Rocca Spagnola fortress dominates the skyline, build in the 16th century and still hugely impressive. Now home to two contemporary art exhibitions, dedicated to the fishing fleets and archaeological heritage of the region, the fortress is well worth setting aside a few hours from a self catering Porto Santo Stefano villa. A walk along the seaside promenade, the Lungomare, is hugely worthwhile, with spectacular views, idyllic cafes and many market stalls selling the best of local crafts.

Santo Porto Stefano is known for its nautical heritage. Fishing is particularly popular (and exciting) from Santo Porto Stefano accommodation. There are a great range of opportunities to go fishing in the area, whether from the rocky shore, the golden beaches or from the side of a boat. Sailing is also hugely popular, and there are a handful of water sports centres from which you can arrange lessons, equipment hire and excursions for sailing, windsurfing, diving and water skiing. The great annual boat race, the Palio dell’Argentario on 15th August, sees the whole town spring into life, and is a day well worth staying in Porto Santo Stefano for.

The beaches of Porto Santo Stefano stretch for many miles around the inside of the bay. The beaches are thin, and swap from fine, golden sand to smooth rocks, which is the perfect conditions for swimming and snorkelling. The warm Mediterranean beaches are perfect for windsurfing too.

Trips to the Island of Giglio are very popular, and leave from the Port in Porto Santo Stefano. The journey takes an hour, and the island is famous for its sensationally clear waters and the charming little village of Giglio Porto, into which the ferry arrives. The stunning island is a huge favourite with swimmers, scuba divers and anyone with a snorkel. Visits to the amazing Roman villa of Giannutro and the Giglio Castle are well worth exploration if you can drag yourself from the beaches of Arenella and Cannelle.

My stay at Villa Cannatelli was simply lovely! The location is perfect, a very peaceful spot in the wood but at the same time it's only ten minutes away from Porto Santo Stefano shops and restaurants. There is plenty of room around, suitable for adults, teens and kids. We particularly enjoyed the pool area and the stunning view from there. We also appreciated the upper terrace, well equipped to get relax and have a drink at sunset. We made much use of the barbecue and the outside eating area as well. Looking at the very unique interior with a lot of character, you can easily recognise the owner as a real traveller. The villa can get up to ten people. We were two families, anyhow all of us could have our own privacy. The owner and the caretaker were both very often in touch with us, to check everything was ok with the property. The maintainance of the pool was also very attentive. The time went on very quickly and it was a pity to leave this fantastic place! Villa Cannatelli definitely worths the value and we highly recommend to stay!!

                                                        Peace amongst the olive trees

                                                        5 of 5
The large well kept garden blends into wild, still to be cultivated, mini forest which was wonderful for our inquisitive border collie who had the free run of the entire estate. The collie took an immediate liking to the owner Silvio and kept him company as he lovingly tended the olive trees in the early mornings. Oh, and the humans had a great time as well! The nice single story guest house is separated from the main residence by just a few steps and there is a variety of couches and garden chairs to sit on around the patio, the centrepiece of which is an ancient olive tree casting its welcome shadow. You will need a car to get into the nearest town, Portos Stefano, which is about 3km away down a very steep hill. The nearest small supermarket, Simply, is found on the approach to the town and from here you can purchase most of what you would need. Silvio will provide access to a private bathing club situated in a beautiful bay a few Kms from the house but for those with sufficient stamina there are many narrow cliff paths leading down to secluded beaches all around the coast of the peninsula. Silvio grows an interesting variety of vegetables so if you decide to cook at home you may be lucky enough to be given courgettes or tomatoes. The best gift for us though was a bottle of Silvios home grown olive oil which we were assured is the best in all of Italy - and don't even mention Spanish olives to Silvio!
