Make a Holiday Rental Villa in Porano, Italy, Your Home Away From Home

To the east of Tuscany in Italy lies the landlocked region of Umbria. Umbria is divided into two provinces, Perugia to the north and Terni to the south. It is lesser known than the neighbouring Tuscany, but holidays in this region are perfect for those who want to get away from throngs of tourists and have a serene time. Porano is a tiny municipality or commune located in Terni, and is popular among visitors for its unspoiled heritage and spectacular beauty. With so much natural beauty all around you, you can bet your bottom dollar there are plenty of self catering properties to choose between.

Things To Do On Holiday in Porano

Porano is the ideal spot to stay and explore the entire region of Umbria. Although it is a lesser known place among tourists, finding self catering villas and other accommodation in Porano is easy. Umbria is a landlocked region so there isn’t a beach close by, but rather it is characterised by vast rolling fields of fresh emerald green. It is a treat to explore the numerous small villages nestled among the rolling hills, and to even be part of the local activities. Agro-tourism or tourism based around the local agricultural activities is picking up as a concept. Some of the main crops grown in this region include potatoes, tobacco, varieties of wheat, and beet root.

Places To Visit On Holiday in Porano

There are several villages around Porano that can be of enormous interest to those intent on exploring local culture and heritage. Numerous buildings and sites of historical and aesthetic value from the middle ages are also to be found in this region. Porano is especially famous for the discovery of the prehistoric Golini and Hescana caves which are a must see for any tourist. Perugia, a big town and the capital of the Umbria region is a good place for a spot of urban enjoyment. It is also home to the region’s largest art and heritage museum known as the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria. Nearby places of interest include the villages of Gubbio, the oldest village in Umbria; Assisi with its famous Basilica di San Francesco; and Todi, a village of immense natural beauty and character.

Weather in Porano

The weather in Umbria is quite similar to Tuscany, but being a landlocked region it is less humid in summer. The weather is mild and pleasant throughout the year, and summers are sunny and warm. The winter temperatures can drop to around 8 – 12 degrees Celsius. High rainfall is rarely seen in this region and it rains the most during autumn season: around October. Generally there is around 14 inches of rainfall per year in this region of Italy.

Travel to Porano

The closest big town to Porano is Perugia. Many villages are quite remote and it could be difficult to find public transport going to the exact village of your choice, however, the A1 Autostrada can give road access to many parts of Umbria. The Siena Perugia highway also provides access. Perugia is a fairly large town with the San Egidio International Airport (PEG). The airport is quite quiet but has connections with Bucharest, Milan and London Stansted (STN).

Beautiful gardens, friendly hosts

4 of 5
As other reviewers have said, from outside you would not know that this oasis exists on the outskirts of the city of Viterbo. A car is a 'must have' item staying here, which is no bad thing. We arrived really needing a week's rest, and that's exactly what we got. The property is immaculately kept and well equipped, the beds are comfortable, all the windows have fly screens to keep out the mozzies and the open plan living room area has air conditioning, which was very welcome. The kitchen is equipped with a gas hob, electric oven, and microwave, fridge, kettle, etc. There's a tv in each room with a few English speaking films to be found here and there on it. Our son brought along his Playstation, which plugged into the one in his bedroom and the wifi was good enough for him to play online. Outside the gardens are very nicely kept. I don't think I've ever seen such a variety and number of butterflies in my life. We even saw a few praying mantis hanging around, and every so often we would see a little lizard break cover and scurry across the ground. Birds flit around from bush to bush. The pool is great. It's unheated, but surprisingly not freezing cold, and about 5ft deep throughout. It's also very well maintained, and doesn't smell of chlorine at all. There's shade from the trees over parts of the pool if you want to stay out of the sun. The owners are friendly and helpful, with that personal touch, like leaving a few kitchen essentials for the guests, so that you don't starve or go thirsty when you first arrive, which was much appreciated, as was the basket of home grown vegetables they gave us part way through the week. Very tasty. Personally, when I go to Italy I want to live like the Italians do, and I wasn't disappointed here. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would recommend this place to anybody who needs a place to rest and relax.

We were a gang of friends wanting a easy escape and this was perfect- the pictures do not do the place justice, it's much much better in real life! Will definitely be coming back next year!
