Make a holiday apartment in Pistoia your home away from home

The province of Pistoia is in the heart of Tuscany’s beautiful countryside, very close to Florence, Lucca and Siena. Although the town's historic attractions aren’t as famous as those of its near neighbours, they are nonetheless architectural and important masterpieces, like the Basilica of the Madonna dell'Umiltà and its dome. The town's ancient plazas are comparable in beauty to any other in Tuscany, and for outdoor types, the Pistoia Mountains have world-famous ski resorts and excellent hiking trails.

For the visitor who wants the creature comforts of home while on their travels, HomeAway has a wonderful range of holiday apartments in the Pistoia area. Whether holidaymakers desire to be near ski resorts, the countryside, the main town or ancient villages, there are holiday properties in every type of location. All are fully furnished and equipped with all mod cons, and some feature swimming pools, gardens and patio areas. Pistoia area holiday villas are just as sumptuous, and some come with luxuries such as saunas and Jacuzzis.

Things to do

-Historic monuments: To visit Pistoia’s old town is to take a journey back in time with its ancient churches and palaces. The green and white marble exterior of the Church of San Giovanni Fuorcivitas is an eye-catching sight and inside are some lovely frescoes and a pulpit that dates back to the 13th century. The fortified residence of the Palazzo dei Vescovi (""Bishops' Palace"") dates back to the 11th century and the Tower of Catilina is from the Middle Ages.

-Festivals: Every year on July 25, Pistoia lays on a spectacular medieval festival – first mentioned in a chronicle from the year 1300. Also in July is the Pistoia Festival, a cultural extravaganza of music, film and literature with open-air operas and movie screenings. August heralds the Feast of St. Bartholomew which dates to the 15th century, and sees children anointed on their foreheads. If planning to attend an event, it is advised to book Pistoia area holiday villas in advance.

-Winter sports: Close to Pistoia are the Pistoia Mountains, offering beautiful scenery and world-class skiing and snowboarding. Some of the best slopes in the Pistoia Apennines can be found at Abetone and Cutigliano, where HomeAway has a further selection of suitable holiday homes. There are also a number of hiking trails in the mountains that can be navigated all year round.

-Cuisine: Tuscans have a deep love and respect for their food, and this is evident in the restaurants of Pistoia. There are lots of local delicacies to choose from which include fruits and Pecorino cheese from the Pistoia Mountains. The food is typically rustic, and even stale bread forms the basis of many dishes such as panzanella (bread soup). Many meals are accompanied by a deliciously perfumed olive oil.

Weather in Pistoia

The weather in Pistoia is pleasingly mild, so visitors will find walking around the historic sites a comfortable experience – summer or winter. The average annual temperature in Pistoia is 14.1°C with a summer peak in July of 29°C. In January the average temperature is 5°C. Snow is not unusual in the winter.

Travel to Pistoia

Pistoia is an easy place to get to, especially by car as there's an autostrada between Pisa and Florence. The two nearest airports are Florence (40 kilometres) and Pisa (75 kilometres) and if visitors decide to take public transport from the airport to holiday apartments in the Pistoia area, there's a good rail connection on the Pisa-to-Florence line.

Beautiful property in stunning surroundings

5 of 5
We experienced a very warm welcome from Jari on our arrival. We were held up in traffic and didn't arrive until 8pm but this did not seem an issue. The property is beautifully laid out and equipped and we very quickly settled in. Our stay was for 5 night in early July with rge tenperatures in the 30's the air conditioning was very welcome and the cellar dining area was well used as it was cool but still felt as we were dining al fresco with the doors open. Jari was always very quick to reply to any emails we sent with queries. We as a family would definitely recommend this property and would not hesitate to return.

Great house and nice hosts

5 of 5
The house was great for our small family, there were all amenities we needed inside of the historic building. It is situated in an old Tuscan village, we instantly got into vacation mood. It's location between Pisa/ Lucca and Florence is perfect for quick day trips to these towns. The hosts are really friendly and we always felt well taken care of.
