Make a holiday apartment in Pisa your home away from home

The beautiful city of Pisa is perched on the right bank of the River Arno and although known the world over for its leaning tower has a lot more to offer the visitor. The capital of the province of Pisa is a historic town with ancient churches, palaces and piazzas. Although rejoicing in its past, it is not stuck there – Pisa is enlivened by its smart bars and restaurants that are frequented by students from its prestigious university and research schools.

Holiday apartments in Pisa offered by HomeAway are stylish in character, fitted with every kind of modern convenience such as televisions and washing machines to ensure a comfortable stay. And with numerous bedrooms, balconies and terraces, there is a lot of room for superlative relaxation. Pisa self catering apartments are equally well equipped and many offer private swimming pools. They provide a great holiday setting, especially if there are children in the party. While in the Pisa area, consider exploring other places such as Valdarno Inferiore where a stunning collection of holiday homes awaits.

Things to do

-Historic monuments: The lopsided Leaning Tower is an icon of the city and its most famous structure. It leans because the ground gave way during construction. A climb of 294 steps takes tourists to the top and provides superb views over Cathedral Square. Among the city’s other historic sights are the Duomo di Pisa, Pisa Cathedral and the 12th-century Pisa Baptistery.

-Museums: Visitors with holiday apartments in Pisa have a wealth of museums to investigate covering art, music, botany and archaeology. Religious paintings and sculptures are on display at Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Among the pieces is a bronze statue of a griffin, an example of Islamic art. Founded in 1591, Orto Botanico e Museo Botanico is one of the world's oldest botanical gardens and its collections include medicinal species and Mediterranean plants.

-Nightlife: Pisa has a lively nightlife scene with many locals and the large student population frequenting the bars and restaurants in and around Piazza Garibaldi. Borgo Stretto has a cluster of chic cafés and a good selection of bars and restaurants by the banks of the river.

-Beaches: There are many ways visitors with Pisa holiday villas will want to enjoy the city’s coastline. Marina di Pisa is a seaside resort characterised by small, clean beaches and Art Nouveau buildings, while the Tirrenia seaside resort encompasses beaches, bathing establishments, campsites and amusement parks. Long, wide stretches of sand can be found at the Park of San Rossore.

Weather in Pisa

Situated on the coast, Pisa has a Mediterranean climate with hot, sunny days in summer and much cooler days in the winter. July and August have the highest temperatures with the thermometer reaching 28-30°C. January is the coldest month with a maximum daily temperature of 11°C.

Travel to Pisa

Pisa has an international airport, called Galileo Galilei with both national and international routes. Trains and buses run from the airport to the city centre. There are also plenty of cabs. Frequent daily trains from Pisa Centrale station connect Pisa with Rome, Florence, Lucca and many other cities.

We had an enchanted family reunion

5 of 5
Despite our late arrival Eva was there to welcome us with a nice bottle of local vin santo and cantucci (tpical cookies). She nicely guided us through the house, telling interesting stories about it, and gave us useful tips on the area. We immediately felt very comfortable. During our three days there the weather hasn't been too good so it was with extreme pleasure that, after intensive cultural visits and some beautiful rambles in the countryside (and some great shopping in town by the way), we would return home. Staying indoor, enjoying the company, in the cosy atmosphere of a charming house was a real treat and definitely made our stay! We are planning to go back end of next summer, to savor again the pleasure of the "dolce far niente" in a kind of James Ivory setting. And next time we shall also take advantage of the swimming pool and the horse riding facilities. We really apreciated to be in a place where the time seems to have stopped a century ago, it was indeed a regenerating break from the usual routine and quite a discovery for our teenagers. We have already expressed our contentment to our hostess but once more wont do any harm, therefore thank you Eva for preserving and sharing this little piece of Italian history.
