Make a holiday villa in Penne your home away from home

HomeAway can help you find the holiday home in Penne that fits the bill. This picturesque old town sits on a hillside surrounded by idyllic natural scenery in the heart of Abruzzo’s Pescara Province. To the west are tall and rugged mountains, while to the east is the sandy Adriatic coast. Penne villas are traditional stone buildings dating back hundreds of years and set in large grounds, often in remote locations with mountain views. Many are furnished with contemporary luxuries such as stylish private pools, while outdoor barbecues are provided by most Penne holiday homes.

Things to do

-History. Penne is a walled medieval hill town with lots of preserved buildings dating back centuries. The cathedral here dates to the 900s, and houses a wooden cross from the 1300s. Interesting sights around the town include the Renaissance “Palace of Death”, which was the residence of the official executioner of the Abruzzo Ultra state in medieval times.

-Nature. Lago di Penne is just minutes away – it’s a regional nature reserve covering 150 hectares of pristine scenery, with a glassy lake and wetlands surrounded by wooded hills. It’s a vital stopover and breeding site for a variety of birds, like the night heron, and an important centre for the conservation of tortoises and otters.

-Food and drink. In the Pescara province there’s a wonderful range of rustic culinary delights. Much vaunted are the local cheeses, among them pecorino, mozzarella, fior de latter and scamorza. Cold meats are also a speciality here, as are the fabulous breads like the thin cuscinetto. Mutton stewed with herbs is a popular rural dish.

-Coast. Abruzzo has a fantastic coastline, extending for 130 kilometres and boasting numerous Blue Flag beaches. Some of the best can be discovered at Pineto, an understated resort known for its sublime sandy beaches fringed by pine forest. Silvi Marina is another great choice, with a long, wide beach furnished with rows of sunbeds.

-Recreation. Just a brief drive west is the Gran Sasso e Monti della Larga National Park, which preserves a large area of Italy’s Apennine Mountains. People come to this magnificent location to enjoy activities like mountain biking, hiking and canoeing, but if that sounds a little too adventurous you could just make for one of the many scenic picnic sites for breathtaking views.

Weather in Penne

On holiday at a villa in Penne you’ll enjoy classic Mediterranean conditions. Summers are long, warm and dry with especially hot weather in July, when highs are known to reach well above 30 degrees during the day. Spring and autumn weather is mostly mild or moderately warm, but with more rainfall and highs that usually hit the mid-teens or more. Winter weather is mild, but there are occasional cold snaps in this part of Abruzzo due to the elevation. Daily temperatures at this time of year normally reach ten degrees.

Travel to Penne

The town of Penne is around half an hour by car from Abruzzo Airport (PSR), which is found just outside the city of Pescara to the east. You can get to this destination from the UK via low-cost airlines, making seasonal flights. Pescara is also the location of the nearest major railway station, and is also home to an important ferry terminal. At Penne you won’t be far from the A14 Autostrade, which covers the length of Italy’s Adriatic coast.

Comfortable design villa with great views

5 of 5
The house was easy to find. The welcome was very friendly and some basic shopping was taken care of. The house is not what you expect to find in Italy. It is very modern more north-west European style (we loved it). The kitchen is well equipped and spacious. Upstairs a.o. a large master bedroom and 2 bathrooms. The bed was very comfortable. It was very hot that week and so the airco was very welcome. The sun is shining on the large balcony from early in the morning until the evening. We enjoyed the great views. A number of nice beaches are within a few miles distance. It was our first time in Abruzzo. It is not so touristic (witch is an advantage) and has a number of nice cities, beaches en national parks to offer.

Fantastic newly built villa with amazing views

5 of 5
We had a fantastic week staying at the villa. The views that welcomed us in the evening were fantastic (the mountains of the Gran Sasso) and after spending the day flying from Stockholm and then traveling from Rome by car, we soon fell asleep in the comfortable beds. The house has a brand new feeling, very clean and with a bathroom for all of the large bedrooms. There is an outdoors dining area with enough chairs and tables for everyone. That also goes for the pool area were we spent many afternoons, swimming in the large swimming pool. Even though the weather was warm the villa stayed cold as long as you remembered to close the doors and windows that were exposed to the sun. During the week we explored the nearby area, with small villages and beaches. There is also a large shopping mall nearby with everything 2 families with small children might need during the stay. Our hosts Sue and John were also very helpful at all times and lived nearby so we could always reach them. All in all, 5 out of 5 stars.
