Things to see in Panicale, Italy

The village’s origins date back as far as 2000BC, and there are historic sites littering the area dating back to a vast array of eras from throughout history. The beautifully elegant gates of Porta Fiorentina and Porta Perugina guard the entrance to the village, and its seven charming little churches within. The ancient theatre has been recently restored, and plays host to a great range of performances and concerts throughout the summer months, drawing visitors from across the region. Attending a performance is an absolutely timeless experience, and one which will stay with you forever.

Staying in Panicale is a wonderfully social experience. Most days start with a leisurely cappuccino in Gallo’s Bar overlooking the stunning landscapes of Umbria, and finish with a nightcap there. During the summer months, there is a weekly free Jazz night every Thursday, which always draws an excitable and exuberant crowd, which fills the main square. Thursday nights in the summer are an absolute treat, as the whole square is decorated with tables and flickering candles which provide a stunning atmosphere. The September wine festival, August Chestnut Festival and Easter Procession are particularly popular, but there are events and festivities throughout the year.

There are three wonderful grocers in Panicale, cutting the freshest of ingredients right before your eyes, so for those hoping to try their hand at cooking the finest of local cuisine from a self catering Panicale property, you can ensure you have the best possible ingredients. There are some excellent cooking courses to be done from Panicale accommodation too, lasting from a single afternoon to multi day courses.

Just a few kilometres away is the beautiful Lake Trasimero. Known historically as an ambush point for Hannibal in his fight against the Romans, Lake Trasimero is an incredibly beautiful spot, and one which offers some sensational walking trails, as well as excellent sailing, swimming and windsurfing conditions.

Beyond expectations

My sister and I rented this house for a our two families plus parents and are we couldn't have chosen better than L'Antica Sorgente. It was a delightful, relaxing house to stay in, the nearby area was friendly and interesting and the views are just incredible. I wish I was back there now sitting at the table under the pergiola. We did have some issues with the wifi that were quickly resolved.

A characterful apartment with a beautiful view over towards Lake Trasimene

5 of 5
The apartment is small but warm, cozy and welcoming. The open terrace has a stunning view across the plain to Lake Trasimene and the rolling hillsides beyond. Although it was not warm enough for us to use the swimming pool, this is ideally placed amidst olive trees, and is kept clean and in good order. The property is sited amongst olives, vines and agricultural activity, and is well-connected with interesting places to visit, such as Citta della Pieve, Castiglione del Lago, and the delightful hilltop town of Panicale close by, which is well equipped with bars and restaurants. Other major tourist attractions within easy reach by road are Orvieto, Perugia and Assisi; we struck out further to visit many delightful and interesting hill-towns such as Todi, Spello, Bevagna and Montefalco. Our hosts, Daniela and Agostino Macellari, were kindness and helpfulness personified. We were welcomed on arrival by Daniela with a large bowl of home-grown tomatoes; later on she brought us spinach and the offer of more tomatoes. She and Agostino had valuable advice about local facilities (supermarkets, petrol stations, restaurants). They are a delightful couple, always ready to help and to ensure that we were comfortable and that all went smoothly in the apartment and in our touring around Umbria. In the Macellari's apartment 'Pioppo' we spent a most enjoyable and relaxing two weeks, which we can thoroughly recommend.
