Make a holiday rental villa or apartment in Palermo, Italy your home away from home

Palermo, on the Italian island of Sicily, has an undeniably eastern vibe, with bustling squares surrounded by sandstone architecture, influenced by the Arabs, Normans, Spaniards and Phoenicians, giving it a unique atmosphere and style, with fascinating sights at every turn.

Things to do in Palermo, Italy

It is hard not to get wrapped up in the energy of the Palermo city centre, where the maze of narrow streets overflow with shops, restaurants and Baroque churches, then suddenly open into flamboyant squares. The old city centre, the Quattro Canti, holds some beautiful historical gems, including the Cappella Palatina, the Norman Cathedral and the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), the finest medieval court in Europe.

The Convento dei Cappuccini catacombs make for mesmerizing viewing from a Palermo apartment, but it is best not to go around meal times as the corpse lines catacombs is more than slightly macabre.

However, if you would like a break from the break neck pace of life in Palermo city centre, the magnificent beaches of the Tyrrhenian Sea are waiting just a few miles from your self catering Palermo apartment. The atmosphere on Mondello Beach is quite different; relaxed and peaceful, where time seems to stand still, and you can while away many hours on the soft sand, listening to the water gently lapping the shore. Sferracavallo Beach is even more peaceful, and is backed by some excellent Palermo restaurants.

Places to go on holiday in Palermo, Italy

Climbing Mt Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, is a hugely popular activity from a Palermo apartment, but you must seek the advice of experts before embarking on any trip to Mt Etna as weather conditions can vary, and thus make the trip very dangerous.

Weather in Palermo, Italy

Average temperatures in Palermo never drop below 12°C, making it a perfect spot to escape the winter blues. Summer is hot and dry, with average temperatures of 28°C, making the beaches of Palermo an instant attraction.

Cheap flights to Palermo, Italy

Palermo International Airport (PMO) is 30km outside of the city centre, but there are regular busses which will take you directly to the front door of your Palermo accommodation rental. Flying London to Palermo takes only a few hours, and you can be settled in your holiday rental villa in Palermo very quickly after leaving the UK, provided by Ryanair.

                                                      5 of 5
The house is light and breezy, facing the gorgeous Mediterranean with all its sparkle and blue. Capo Zefferano looms to the East (right, facing the sea) and the hills behind Palermo to the West. The house feels secluded even though there are neighbors on both sides. The patios are wonderful and one can always find shade as the sun moves around, behind, the house over the course of the day. The kitchen is more than functional and has the "right" pots for vacation cooking with a family. The beds are comfortable (we slept four in three rooms) and the living space is big enough to be able to find a private nook for reading or thinking. (TV and WiFi are good.) The gulls and doves "debate, argue, and comment" amusingly, through the day. The mosquitos are a fact of life but as long as you prepare for them and keep the screen doors closed, all is well. The house is quiet, surrounded by lovely gardens tended to by Vincenzo and nestled up snug against its cliff; even the busy weekend traffic on single-laned Via Perez is not noticeable. Porticello is close by for shopping and there are numerous green markets there. Day excursions to Cefalú or Trapani or Agrigento are easily done. For a day trip to Palermo, one can take the short (15 minute) train trip from Bagheria but one needs a car to reach the station. In fact, a car is pretty much necessary for this property, although my son and I did walk to Porticello for groceries one day. It's about 8 kilometres round trip and uphill much of the way back. (Just a note, a small car with an excellent turning radius is preferable for negotiating the steep driveway and small turn around at the bottom.) The swimming is not for little children but is otherwise spectacular. Steep steps lead down to the rocky base of the cliff. On carefully sliding over barnacled rocks decorated with mossy seaweed into the sea, one is immediately in deep water with swell and, depending on the wind and tide, some waves sloshing into the rocky cove. Once past those waves the swimming is delightful There is occasionally a tow. For swimming with small children there are two beaches off the road to Porticello. There are plenty of places to eat in beautiful Porticello. Antica Pizzeria La Punta is worth it just for the view, but the food is excellent as well. The property was very clean when we arrived and Antonio and Debbie are terrific hosts. We would enthusiastically recommend this property to others and also to our family.

The apartment was a little walk from historical area in an interesting part of town and host was very helpful. Excellent value.

We stayed in the Sea House apartment at Casa Tuzzo for the months of December and January. The apartment is on the third floor and has a wonderful south facing roof terrace which was the best feature of this comfortable apartment. We were able to sunbathe and relax out there almost daily with the midday temperatures in the sun and out of the wind there nearing 30 even during these months. The apartment is well equiped but the living space may be a bit small for larger groups, although there are two bedrooms (one very large) and there's plenty of room on the terrace. There are windows facing all four compass directions for great views of the entire bay. The harbour was down a flight of stairs fifty yards from the apartment's front door and was very convenient for walking our dog. Immediately to the east of the harbour is Balestrate's beach. We went for runs on the more than 5km long beach to the west which connects Balestrate with Alcamo Marina and Castellammare del Golfo. Breathtakingly beautiful! Especially the views of Scopello where there is also a large nature reserve with hiking trails in the hills along the seaside. Nearby we also enjoyed visiting Terrasini for lunch on the terrace on several occasions and a little further west near Palermo Mondello was also one of our favourite spots. Another favourite was Sciacca on the southern coast. We also enjoyed Corleone, San Vito Lo Capo, Trapani, the ghost town of Poggioreale, Salemi, Marsala, Agrigento with it's ancient Greek temples, Enna, Catania, Aci Castello, Aci Trezza, Messina and of course Palermo. We also loved the buzz of the main street and main square of Alcamo on a saturday evening. One last don't miss is Cefalu which is also a beautiful seaside town. Sicily is a lovely rugged island and we shall definitely return and will use Natalia and Piero's apartment as our base once again when we do so !!
