Make a holiday rental home or villa in Palau, Italy your home away from home

Palau is one of the most picturesque seaside towns in the Olbia-Tempio province of Sardinia – and that is quite a compliment when you consider how many of them exist. Palau is famous for its rocky coastline, with Capo d’Orso – a large rock that looks unmistakeably like a bear – being one of the most famous pieces of granite in the country, and drawing visitors for miles around. Tourist facilities in Palau are of a high standard and accommodation here is good value for money.

Things to do in Palau, Italy

Palau is an up-and-coming tourist area that is growing in popularity due to its scenic stretch of coastline. The bear-like rock Capo d’Orso is the main must-see in the town, and stands 122 metres high, looking out to sea. The rock is possible to reach on foot, and the views out over the ocean can reach for many miles on a clear day.

A good selection of bars, cafes and restaurants can be found in the town centre, and many holidaymakers are content with spending lazy days on the beach and relaxed evenings sampling the local cuisine and washing it down with a few drinks. Amenities in Palau are also good, with supermarkets, shops, banks and a pharmacy all within close reach of each other, and more to be found at the night market, which is open until midnight.

Palau can be used as a base for exploring the province, and a great way of getting around is to use the Trenino Verde (the Green Train). The train takes passengers through the lush hinterland, stops off at various lesser visited villages and towns along the way, and displays a more rural side to Sardinia than is found in the busy tourist spots of the Costa Smeralda. Palau also has a modern harbour and boat trips are easy to arrange.

Places to visit on holiday in Palau, Italy

Porto Rafael is just a ten minute drive from Palau and another pleasant seaside town. It offers a little more variety in the way of bars and restaurants, and means you only have to take a short taxi ride if you fancy a few glasses of the excellent local wine with your evening meal. Further afield, the Olbia-Tempio province is primed for day trips, with Porto Pollo (7km) living up to its name as a surfer’s paradise.

Weather in Palau, Italy

Average daily high temperatures in Palau range from 12C to 30C throughout the year, with December, January and February being the coldest months and July and August being the hottest. If you are simply content with having warm weather and avoiding the rain, you may wish to consider visiting Palau during May or June.

Flights to Palau, Italy

Palau is most easily reached from the UK via Olbia-Costa Smeralda Airport, 35km away. The airport receives flights from destinations such as Birmingham and London Gatwick, and through airlines that include Ryanair and Thomas Cook Airlines. Flight time from UK to Olbia is just over two hours.

Would highly recommend this well positioned, clean, secure and spacious apartment.

4 of 5
This apartment is in a lovely position if you want to be able to walk into Palau and several sets of keys provided so if you’re in a big group, you all have easy access to it. A very spacious apartment, nice big rooms with comfortable indoor and outdoor seating. Efficient fans in the bedrooms to keep cool in the summer. New electrical appliances – fridge freezer, washer and cooker. Fabio (the owner) was waiting for our arrival and was very helpful.

Semi-detached house with shared garden, nice view

4 of 5
We very much enjoyed our stay in Porto Rafael. This was our second visit to this place. The owner of the property is extremely helpful, replying very quickly and speaking good English. The property is a semi-detached house with small stairs inside located in 30 meters from the parking. It has a shared green garden in front of the house. When we were outside we always could see and hear our neighbors in Ginestra 2 and Ginestra 1, luckily our neighbors were quite and friendly. The location of the property is high from the main road, getting there by walk was tiring, we had to use a car all the time even when going to a nearest beach. All necessary kitchen facilities were provided, please bring your own hair dryer, it was not provided. On arrival we had 2 bottles of water, which was very helpful, as we arrived very late and all shops were closed. On request we were provided with additional towels. The bed-linen are provided, but not changed if not agreed with cleaners in advance. Please do print all instructions and recommendation from Sofia as she provided very good list of restaurants and beaches around as well as instruction how to get to the place.
