Things to do

-Local history Paganico is a picturesque walled town boasting a number of interesting medieval buildings, including the Old Hospital, from the 1100s and the Romanesque San Michele Arcangelo church. Grosseto is also a short drive away and features numerous historical sites, including defensive walls, churches with renaissance art, palazzi and numerous attractive old squares surrounded by stone buildings.

-Coast. The Maremma coast is little more than half an hour away to the west by car, and features more than 90 individual beaches. Punta Ala is perhaps the closest destination, and is home to Capanna Civinini, which is overlooked by wooded hills and the medieval Torre Civette.

-Nature. Paganico is set within a classic Tuscan landscape of rolling hills with cypress and olive groves. Trails snake through wooded valleys, and to the south you’ll be able to explore the banks of the Arbia river. You’ll also be able to get detailed information about walking routes from the tourist office in Paganico.

-Gastronomy. Food in the Maremma region is famed for its simplicity, based purely on local ingredients. Specialities include sliced cold meats and cheeses, as well as a variety of cured sausages and pates. Early spring is wild asparagus season, while wild boar features in many dishes, including wild boar stew, made from tomato, wine and local herbs like rosemary.

-Day trips. There’s a fantastic range of options for day-trips around Paganico. If you’re interested in ancient history then Roselle’s archaeological park, with its Etruscan tomb complex is about half an hour away. Further afield are Renaissance cities like Siena and Pisa, while Florence’s world-famous architecture and culture sits around 90 minutes by car to the north.

Wonderful Getaway

5 of 5
This was our first trip to the Tuscany region of Italy and I was very nervous choosing a place online without being as knowledgable about this exact location in proximity to other things. We drove from Rome and then onto Florence after this stop, and this was a perfect location in between to rest and restore. This cottage was everything we wanted and more. Lucca did a wonderful job of attaching a "booklet" of information that we could download before our trip. It was a wealth of knowledge and really helped us think about what we wanted to do before we got there. Once there, Lucca was very gracious about giving directions and helping with any accommodations we wanted. Every suggestion he made in his information pages was excellent. Some of the things we loved.. Banfi Castle wine tasting, Montalcino, the beach club in Monte Argentario area, reading by the pool, the restaurant in Monte Antico. The villa itself sits in a picturesque setting. I had to keep looking outside and reminding myself that the scenery was real. Their family lives in the main home so it is all well loved and maintained as part of a working farm. The villa was private and extremely clean with everything we could have needed and more. Everything was perfectly selected and truly lovely. There was no air conditioning, and we were there in the hottest month of July, but we were never uncomfortable. The breezes and the windows provided a peaceful setting and plenty of cool. Going to sleep at night with the sounds of all the quiet nature around us was just what we needed. There were several little garden areas around, as well as the pool. In the garden around the home I felt like I was sitting in a beautiful English garden flanked with incredible lavender and a natural Italian garden. Fiorella was very sweet in greeting us, showing us around, and getting us settled. I am already dreaming of returning to Italy. If traveling through Tucany again, this villa would be one of the first places I would return to. My only suggestion would be to get familiar with regular road maps before going. Having never driven in Italy before, I found driving from Rome to this villa was easy until the last few turns. Lucca gave great directions but when tired at the end of an unfamiliar drive it can be a bit trickier. Google Maps did not always pick up well from the car so the turn to Monteverdi was tricky the first time. Once we were acclimated, it was much easier.
