Otricoli is small in size and sadly skipped over by many visitors to the area, but there is much for this historic Umbrian commune to be proud of. Originally known as Ocriculum (meaning Acropolis), Otricoli has an enviable hilltop location, and is one of the best destinations in the entire region for a relaxing ‘get away from it all’ break. Holiday rental accommodation in Otricoli is generally of a high standard, and if you have ever dreamed of renting an authentic Italian farmhouse, this could be the place to do it.

Things to do in Otricoli, Italy

Otricoli has undergone considerable archaeological excavation over the years, with many of the smaller findings from the town now being housed in the museums of the Vatican. With a little careful direction, however, it is possible to discover the remains of a Roman amphitheatre on the former excavation site. Other sites worth a look in the ancient Roman village include the town hall and the Collegiata of St. Maria Assunta.

The remainder of Otricoli is relatively modern, with two excellent restaurants and several bars, shops and cafes. There is enough here to enjoy a self-catering holiday without having to leave town for food supplies, and the locals are some of the friendliest people you will meet on your travels.

Otricoli sits near the River Tiber, and this area makes for some excellent walks, hikes and nature-spotting trips. The excellent weather and relaxing atmosphere mean a picnic is a great option during spring and summer months, allowing you to relax, far away from the tourists throngs. Otricoli’s hilltop location also means that some panoramic views can be had from all around town, and the air is incredibly cool and fresh.

5 of 5
We had such a great stay. Lovely and friendly owner and really helpful guide when we arrived and during our stay. Thank you both. A beautiful home with a stunning view. Great pool and lots of really well thought out spaces to enjoy and make the most of the weather and view. Really restful.

A lovely Italian house with stunning views

4 of 5
We stayed for two weeks in August and had a wonderfully relaxing time. The house and gardens were very spacious, with a lovely pool area. The views from the house and pool were stunning and we spent every day soaking up the glorious Italian sunshine and the evenings eating and drinking on the terrace. The house is in the countryside with beautiful views, very unspoilt and peaceful. There is a train station at Stimigliano with trains into Rome or Florence, so it was easy to have a day trip for sightseeing. It was only an hour's drive to get to/from Rome airport too, so very easy to get to by car. We found several supermarkets nearby to buy everything we needed. The large Conad store at Forano was only 10 mins drive or so. Even closer to home (5 mins drive, literally at the end of the road) was Eurospin (very handy for some food basics), Zanzibar (takeaway pizza/roast chicken, etc), plus a Gelateria and a very handy homeware store (Super Bazaar) for getting those essentials we forgot to pack! We also went out to eat a few times at Ristorante "Da Lina" Pizzeria, which is only 5 mins drive) with tables outside under olive trees and the most amazing (and huge) pizzas. The house was well stocked with all the kitchen equipment we needed and a handy utility/storage room. We couldn't get the washing machine to work, but that could have been user-error! There isn't an internal staircase between the upstairs and downstairs of the main house, they are two totally separate apartments with external steps to the upstairs. Ideal if you are two separate families, but something to be aware of if you are one large family/group with children. We used all the bedrooms for sleeping, but really just used the main downstairs kitchen/living room/terrace for all our cooking/living purposes. All in all, it was a lovely and very restful two weeks and we would definitely hope to return in the future. Thank you to Paolo & Lucia for letting us stay in your lovely house!
