Make a holiday villa in Montevettolini your home away from home

Rising on the north-western slopes of the Montalbano hills is the small hamlet of Montevettolini, an ancient settlement with origins that date back to the 12th century. For the holidaymaker who wants nothing but peace and quiet this is the real deal; a sublime setting that looks out across the beautiful Tuscan landscape. It is an ideal base from which to set out and explore the pastoral pleasures of central Italy. With colourful fiestas, a spa resort on its doorstep and a stunning landscape to explore, visitors to Montevettolini are spoilt for choice.

HomeAway’s fabulous collection of holiday villas in Montevettolini are situated in and around the hilltop hamlet offering easy access to the area’s main attractions and providing superb views of the countryside. These home from homes have a wealth of amenities including televisions, microwaves, coffee makers and fridges to make each stay the last word in comfort. Holiday apartments in Montevettolini are also available, smart properties that are suitable for singles, couples, families and small groups. For the visitor who wants a Tuscan voyage of discovery, Montevettolini is less than an hour’s drive from one of the region’s most incredible sights, the town of Lucca where the medieval walls are topped by a huge circular park.

Things to do

-Outdoor activities: The Montalbano hills are the birthplace of Leonardo da Vinci and the landscape is recognised the world over for its beauty. There is an extensive network of pedestrian and cycling trails in the area that pass by ancient churches, forests, medieval palaces and vineyards.

-Relaxation: For hundreds of years, visitors to the area have been surrendering their bodies to the natural thermal grottos of Monsummano, just five kilometres from Montevettolini. Steam and hot water exudes from natural cavities at Grotta Parlanti located more than 110 metres deep inside a mountain. At Grotta Giusti, a modern spa resort has grown up that offers a range of relaxing and therapeutic treatments.

-Events: Montevettolini’s narrow lanes and piazzas witness frequent folk and religious festivals that hark back to ancient traditions. Visitors who book their holiday villas in Montevettolini during the second week of September will see its most colourful party, the Medieval Festival. Locals dress up in period costumes as merchants, crusaders, falconers, pilgrims and troubadours, wandering the streets and medieval themed market playing musical instruments. Other festivals include the costumed procession of Jesus's Passion and Death. It is held every three years on Good Friday.

-Historic monuments: Montevettolino is like a living museum with ancient squares, buildings, churches and palaces. They include the Villa Medicea built as a hunting residence for the powerful Medici of Florence, between the 15th and the 16th centuries. Older than this is the former town hall palace, constructed before the 13th century.

Weather in Montevettolini

Montevettolini is a good year-round holiday destination as the climate is warm and temperate. The driest and hottest months are July and August where the average temperature is between 28 and 30°C. In January, the average temperature is 5°C and the wettest month is November.

Travel to Montevettolini

Visitors can reach their holiday apartments in Montevettolini by flying into Florence (50 kilometres) or Pisa (60 kilometres) and then taking the train to Pistoai Station. From there, taxis and local buses can complete the rest of the journey. The most convenient way to explore the local environs is with a hire car.

Wonderful, couldn't ask for more!

The villa was lovely and spacious, very well equipped. What a view! The pool was out of this world, the kids loved it as did we. Giuseppe was so so helpful, booked us a restaurant, gave us travel advice - where to park for the main cities. It is perfectly positioned for Lucca, Pisa and Florence, nothing was too far. It was like having a friend you could call on -thank you so much we had a lovely holiday. The local restaurants were lovely and locals friendly. It was a peaceful haven, you do need to drive but just gorgeous we had a lovely lovely time. Thanks Giuseppe and Raoul xxxx

We spent a very happy week at this charming property at the beginning of September. The owner, Stefania, gave us a warm welcome, showing us round and giving us lots of useful tips - she'd also been great about answering questions by email before we arrived. The spacious garden, large swimming pool and generous outside seating area are truly exceptional - and, for us, a perfect setting for a sunny, Tuscan holiday. Thank you, Stefania, for everything - we'll be back!
