  • Lovely stay at Il Nidino
    5 of 5

We spent a delightful fortnight at Il Nidino in the Tuscan hills near Montecatini Terme. The owners Barbara and Andrea are lovely people, and were very welcoming and attentive on arrival (the wine and cake were very much appreciated!), and also throughout our stay. The house is in a lovely peaceful setting near the hamlet of Nievole, a few miles from Montecatini Terme. As others have commented, the track up from the main road to the house is somewhat narrow and winding. We arrived after dark, and Andrea met us in the main road through Nievole and we followed him up to the house. We had no problems negotiating it in our rented VW Golf thereafter. The house is well equipped, cooker, dishwasher, washing machine, Wifi, Sky TV, air conditioning in the bedrooms. Outside there is plenty of space to sit in the sun or the shade. There is a covered area near the house with a large table for eating outside, a gazebo near the pool, and even an outdoor kitchen area also near the pool, with a cooker and a fridge. There is also a pizza oven and barbecue. The pool is not large, but great for a refreshing dip after a day in the sun. There are two restaurants about half a mile from the house. Barbara and Andrea recommended La Margherita. We ate there and the food was excellent, the service friendly and attentive, and the prices extremely reasonable - we highly recommend a visit. Within easy reach are Florence, Pistoia (not one of the Tuscan towns that features prominently on the tourist trail, but a delightful old town, with some beautiful churches and plenty of restaurants), Lucca, Prato, the spa town of Montecatini Terme and the lovely village of Montecatini Alto which can be reached by a funicular railway from Montecatini Terme. Sienna,San Gimignano, Barga, Viareggio and Pisa are a bit further away, but nevertheless doable in a day trip (although we didn't go this time having been to all of them before). There is a small shop in Nievole which is fine for bread, cheese and other bits and pieces, but we did our main food shopping at the Esselunga supermarket in Montecatini Terme, which is 15-20 minutes away in the car, and has everything you need. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable stay at Il Nidino, and our thanks to Barbara and Andrea for their hospitality and friendliness (and also for the lovely pastries which Barbara brought when she came to clean the pool!). • A relaxing stay in a beautifully kept, well equipped and authentic home

We had a great holiday in this delightful house. The area was tranquil with amazing views and exciting roads. The house was spotlessly clean and very well equipped with many places nearby to visit and to dine out. Paul was a charming man - very helpful but unobtrusive. Vaughan's directions to reach the property were extremely good and we arrived with ease. The roads are narrow but the Italians actually drive very well and we had no problems. The nearby hill villages were a delight to explore. Everyone we met was very friendly and welcoming. The house is very well serviced with DVDs and books but we were too busy exploring and drinking in the views to make full use of them! Cannot praise this house or the area enough.
