Make a holiday home, farm house or apartment in Montepulciano, Italy your home away from home

Situated in Italy’s popular Tuscany region, the town of Montepulciano is set on a hilltop with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. This southern Tuscany town is about 115 miles north of Rome and 43 miles south east of Siena and is best known as a high class wine and food producing area. Montepulciano is most popular with couples, and a variety of holiday accommodation includes apartments and town homes, though many of the beautifully converted farmhouses in the area would also make this a great destination for families too.

Things to do on holiday in Montepulciano, Italy

The town and ‘comune’ is most famous for Montepulciano wine, though it is also a famous producer of some wonderful Italian foods too, making this an excellent gastro holiday destination! Pork, cheese, honey and lentils, as well as a variation on spaghetti pasta, are the region’s specialties, and you can try these along with some Montepulciano wine in some of the town’s restaurants.

Apart from the wine and food, Montepulciano has some interesting attractions too. The car-free city centre is great for strolling around, and from the Clock Tower of the Palazzo Comunale there are some wonderful views over the town and beyond. Piazza Grande is one of the town’s major squares where the medieval Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo de Nobili-Tarugi add to the impressive architecture. The Civic Museum and San Biagio Church are also popular, but wine lovers will be most interested in the numerous opportunities for tasting some of the Montepulciano wine, or taking a tour of the nearby vineyards and wineries.

Places to visit on holiday in Montepulciano, Italy

Holidaymakers wanting to spend a day away from their Montepulciano holiday accommodation will find that the whole of the Tuscany region has some beautiful scenery and landscapes to enjoy, making this a great place to take a walking, cycling or car tour. You may like to head towards some of the neighbouring towns and cities, such as Pienza, Chiusi, and Radicofani. Pienza’s historical centre is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Or if you have more time available, travel south to Rome and experience all that this amazing city has to offer.

The weather in Montepulciano, Italy

Montepulciano, and the rest of the Tuscany region, is known for its hot summers, and a climate which is closest to Mediterranean. Winters are mild, though can get colder at elevation in the interior of Tuscany. However, this is still a wonderful destination to visit in the winter too.

Flights to Montepulciano, Italy

As the town does not have its own airport your best choice to get to your Montepulciano holiday accommodation is to fly to Florence, Pisa or Rome. Florence is closest though does not have as much choice when it comes to airlines. Rome is a little closer than Pisa and with its good flight links this might be the best choice.

Fabulous Tuscan Villa & Base for Multi Generational Trip

5 of 5
We enjoyed Villa Montepulicano for our family of 9 (3 generations) as it was a perfect base for a week in Tuscany filled with day trips, relaxing & fabulous meals. Maurizo, the owner, could not have been more gracious & helpful, even curating an olive & wine tasting in a beautiful grove across from the villa that the kids even enjoyed. The villa has amazing views & during our epic multi course dinners outside, we enjoyed the most amazing sunsets of our trip (sun sets around 9:45 PM in June). The spacious patio & pool area were where our family spent most of our time. The pool, comfy chairs & umbrellas were perfect during a heat wave. We had local chefs Barsquelina & Michele cook every night and the meals were incredible - highly recommend hiring them! The villa's bedrooms are spread out which gives everyone space, including a detached guest cottage. Several of the bedrooms get bright early sun & some of the bedding could use an upgrade - that is the only fault we could find
