Things to do

-Food and drink. There are a number of Tuscan specialities that are well worth sampling. When it comes to wine, you’ll be close to the Montescudaio region, known for both its reds and whites. Food-wise, you could try the pasta pappardelle with boar sauce and discover a whole variety of local salamis.

-Local history. Montelopio is not far from Peccioli, a picturesque hill-town, home to an attractive medieval centre with a beautiful central square, a Praetorian palace and a handful of historic Pisan-style churches. The Chapel of Santa Caterina has a 15th Century fresco by Renaissance painter Benozzo Gozzoli.

-Pisa. One of the region’s essential day-trips, Pisa is obviously best-known for its iconic Leaning Tower, but there’s a catalogue of other fantastic monuments besides. Right next-door is the Duomo di Pisa, which contains stunning Renaissance artworks, while the Baptistry is recognised by its large dome. Among the numerous museums is San Matteo, which has a fantastic collection of Renaissance art.

-Nature. Montelopio is surrounded by archetypal Tuscan countryside, with rolling hills, cypress groves and farmland. It’s all waiting to be experienced first-hand in the open air, and you’ll be able to get all the information you need about local walks and bike rides from the tourism office in Peccioli.

-Coast. The Tyrrhenian Sea is just over half an hour west of Montelopio, and offers a host of interesting fishing towns and resorts. If you’d like to spend a day at the beach, then Bibbona is a great option, with a long and wide stretch of sand and an extensive dune system.

Lovely homely apartment with great views in the countryside

5 of 5
The apartment is on the ground floor, spacious and homely, with a table on the terrace and a path down to a shared infinity pool that you can swim in and has beached sides, with gardens around. All this in Tuscany woodland and beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed a very peaceful week resting and venturing out to nearby towns for supplies when they ran out. Also enjoyed a pleasant meal at Casa Masi largely because of the gardens and the steak florentine (just past Montaione).

Perfect Tuscany!

5 of 5
Borgo Mummallia is an oasis in the Tuscan countryside, perfect for visiting all the major regional sites. Colm is a most charming and obliging host and La Terazza is a very well appointed and beautifully situated within a well maintained converted hamlet.
