Make a holiday rental home or cottage in Monteriggioni, Italy your home away from home

Monteriggioni is completely walled medieval town in the Province of Siena in Tuscany – and probably the best known walled town in Italy. Apart from a small amount of work done in the 16th Century, very little has been done to the town since it was built in the 13th Century by the overlords of Siena, making Monteriggioni an interesting and unique location for a self catering holiday.

Things to do in Monteriggioni, Italy

Monteriggioni is so evocative of the medieval period that simply walking around the walled town and admiring the architecture is a major draw for the many tourists that visit every year. The walls and buildings are regarded as the best of their kind in Italy, and when the towers are lit up at night it can even give the appearance that the town is floating above its hilltop location, when viewed from outside of the walls.

The ‘Festa Medievale’ is held on the first weekend of every July, and draws an array of artists and performers from all over the country. Locals dress up in medieval costume and medieval drinks and dishes are available, making for a festival like no other. This is a great time to visit Monteriggioni as it is also when the weather is typically at its best.

The main piazza of the town is dominated by the Piazza Roma – a Romanesque church. Narrow streets lead off the piazza, leading to an eclectic mix of shops, cafes, restaurants, wine tasting parlours and bars, making the city great for exploring, and enabling you to find somewhere without the throngs of tourists that can build up in Piazza Roma. The outlying areas of the town are covered in vineyards, and a wine tasting trip is an essential part of any visit.

Places to visit on holiday in Monteriggioni, Italy

Monteriggioni is an excellent base from which to visit the surrounding towns and cities. The bordering commune of Castellina in Chianti has a huge 14th Century Rocca (Castle) which is well worth a visit, and Colle di Val d’Elsa and Pogginbonsi both have enough tourist attractions of their own to warrant a day trip. The city of Siena is just 15km from Monteriggioni, and has a great mix of art, culture and modern living.

Weather in Monteriggioni, Italy

Summer is the best time for a holiday rental in Monteriggioni, with temperatures regularly upwards of 30C. Winters are a lot colder, and often below 10C. Rainfall is usually heaviest in early spring and autumn.

Flights to Monteriggioni, Italy

The best option for getting to Monteriggioni from the UK is to fly to Florence Airport (FLR), then drive or take the train for the second leg of the journey, which will take around an hour. A second option is to get a budget flight to Pisa. Flights are often cheaper than ones to Florence, but the second leg of the journey twice as long.

We arrived very late, but were made welcome. The house is old style on the outside which is great. It has all the modern items you require and all work perfectly. it is very near the train station and the old town of Lucca (just a short walk). We traveled from Pisa airport with no problems. There is lots of space in the apartment and a garden out the back of the house. Would I stay there again: YES The owner lives in the house in their own apartment and was available if we required assistance, but outside of that we only waved when passing. The house has history and charm. Shops are close by, car not required. E. Campbell
