Make a holiday rental home or apartment in Modena, Italy your home away from home

Modena, the capital of the province of the same name, is located to the south of the Po valley in the unspoilt Emilio Romagna region of Italy. Such is the broad range of activities on offer in Modena and the surrounding area that it is easy to successfully combine days of sightseeing and outdoor adventure with evenings of fine wine and enjoying the excellent local cuisine in local restaurants. Take your phrasebook though – you are off the beaten tourist track in this historic part of Italy.

Things to do in Modena, Italy

Modena is often referred to as the ‘Capital of Engines’ due to its long association with the motor car industry, and if you always harboured a love for Italian sports cars you will be well at home in this destination. You may not be able to afford to rent a Ferrari in the famous shade of ‘Modena Yellow’, but you can always visit the Ferrari factory in the city, and you are always likely to see at least a few of the supercars during your stay in the birthplace of the company’s founder.

Modena has a glorious medieval centre that is amongst the finest examples of its type in the country – and that is an extremely high accolade in a country rich in medieval heritage. The 12th century cathedral dominates the old town, and together with its annexed campanile has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Such is the quality of the architecture and the building’s interior, it is easy to lose several hours as you wander around and explore.

The Piazza Grande (in which the cathedral is located) is the main meeting place in the city, and has a number of other cultural sights of interest dotted around it. These include the 17th century town hall and the 15th century clock tower, with the city’s main museum – the Palace Museum – being located nearby at St. Augustine Square.

Places to visit on holiday in Modena, Italy

The Emilio Romagna region of Italy is rich with historic and well-preserved cities. Bologna (48km) is less than an hour away by car or train, and it would be a shame to visit Modena with visiting this treasure of Italy. As with Modena, Bologna has an array of attractions, including some of the finest gastronomy in Italy (if not Europe), an abundance of nature-related activities and a plethora of historical and cultural attractions.

Weather in Modena, Italy

If you elect to stay in your Modena holiday rental accommodation during the busiest months of July and August, you are likely to be welcomed to the city by clear skies, plenty of sunshine and temperatures hovering around the 30C mark. Spring and autumn are also pleasant seasons in which to visit, but take your coat if you plan to visit during the 2-5C temperatures of winter.

Flights to Modena, Italy

Bologna Airport (BLQ) is 39km away from Modena holiday accommodation, and is the destination for regular British Airways flights from London Gatwick. Ryanair also fly to this airport from around the UK and Ireland, so there are rarely any problems in terms of availability, but it always pays to book your fight well in advance.

Lovely

5 of 5
Wonderful property, extremely comfortable. Excellent welcome - Richard took us to see Parmesan being made in the local dairy - very interesting. The pool was lovely, we were in it every day and enjoyed swimming in local rivers and waterfalls. This property is very off the beaten track so although we found plenty to amuse ourselves with, if you want to visit lots of cities etc this probably isn't for you. Would definitely recommend for an active (or totally inactive) family holiday!

What a lovely apartment with gorgeous views

5 of 5
I cannot recommend this property enough, unless you hate mountain roads ! The apartment has everything you could reasonably ask for. The owners are attentive and genuine and have mastered the art of not appearing to be in your face whilst trying to look after you. The position of the property is simply stunning and definitely don't make assumptions from the drive from Bologna - which is rather flat and uninteresting. To wake to the views from the bedrooms every day was a true privilege and left me somewhat envious of Caroline and Stephen. There is lots to do around particularly if you are a car nut or just relax around the pool, drink fine Italian wine and enjoy the rest.
