Make a holiday villa in Massa-Carrara your home away from home

From marble mountains to sandy beaches, medieval squares to nature reserves, Massa-Carrara has an extraordinary diversity of habitats and attractions. The province is situated on the border with Liguria and Emilia Romagna and is named after its two main towns. The area is characterized by its 20 kilometres of gorgeous sandy beaches and the Apuan Alps, a magnificent mountain chain. With wonderful architecture and plenty of outdoor sports and activities, Massa-Carrara is a popular, family-friendly holiday destination.

HomeAway has an exquisite range of holiday villas in Massa-Carrara in all the major areas. Whether visitors want to be close to the beach, mountains or historical towns of Massa and Carrara, there’s a holiday property to suit those needs. Massa-Carrara holiday farmhouses are also available, with spacious grounds, private swimming pools and expansive outdoor terraces. All the properties offer premier comforts with tastefully furnished living rooms and bedrooms.

Things to do

-Historic monuments: The winding, cobblestone streets of Massa’s medieval quarter are a big draw. Two of the town's must-see sights are the cathedral with its history of over 800 years, and the 16th-century Palazzo Ducale of Cybo Malaspina. This was once the residence of Napoleon's sister, Élisa. Carrara also has numerous sites of historic interest with a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral and a 16th-century Ducal Palace.

-Natural attractions: Carrara is known as the “city of marble” for its quarries, such as the working mine at La Piana. These are located in the nearby mountains and some can be visited. They are spectacular sites containing vast deposits of the rock. Marble has been quarried here for approximately 2,000 years.

-Outdoor activities: The hilly and mountainous terrain of the Apuan Alps offers visitors with Massa-Carrara holiday farmhouses ample outdoor activities. There’s hiking and mountain biking in the autumn, spring and summer, and skiing at resorts in Lunigiana during the winter. Massa-Carrara’s Apuan Coast features attractive, wide beach expanses, but tourists may also feel revitalised with a trip to the countryside by Lucca Region, where gorgeous holiday rentals are also available.

-Food and drink: Like many places in Tuscany, Massa-Carrara has its own regional delicacies. Meat-filled tordelli and lasagne intordellate are two typical Massese pasta dishes, and herb cakes filled with cheese, egg and wild vegetables are a local favourite. Spongata is a typical desert. This is a puff-pastry tart containing dried fruit and jam.

Weather in Massa-Carrara

Massa-Carrara has a warm, temperate and sunny climate with mild winters and balmy summers. The Apuan Alps shelters the region from the cold winds of the north. August is the hottest month when the temperature can climb to 28°C. February is the coldest month when the average daily temperature can drop to below freezing.

Travel to Massa-Carrara

The visitor with a holiday villa in Massa-Carrara has a number of options to get to the area. The airport choices include Genua Airport (120 kilometres), Pisa Airport (40 kilometres) and Florence Airport (100 kilometres). There are good rail connections to many major Italian cities and a network of A-roads runs through the province.

Comfortable house convenient for the coast

5 of 5
Sonia was at the house to meet us, show us around and explain how everything worked. This was much appreciated. We found the house extremely comfortable for our week's stay. Our upstairs bedroom suited us nicely: good bed, plenty of storage space, excellent quiet air conditioning and convenient large shower room adjacent. The very secluded outside space and seating areas were excellent. The secure gated parking was a bonus. The road at the side of the house is busy and can be noisy, especially at the weekend. The house is a short walk from the beach, local cafes and some small shops. There are several large super markets only a short drive away. It's in a great position to explore the area. There are trains from Massa Central station to the Cinque Terre (which is VERY touristy). Porto Venere is about an hour's drive. Parking is tricky but it's a lovely place. Lucca and lots of other old towns are also within easy driving distance.

Escape to Tuscany!

5 of 5
I travelled to Villa Elena for a week in June and was welcomed to the sight of Prosecco, Parma ham and a Pint! Villa Elena is very close to Pontremoli and Villafranca, towns you can catch trains to Parma, Pisa, Florence etc. though I would advise you to hire a car as there are many sights to spend a day at. I travelled West as far as Portofino (where I moor my yacht when I'm not using it) and hiked along the Cinqueterra. I still only achieved about 50% of what I had set out to do in that week (didn't get near the Carrara mountains). This is the ideal place for couples and families alike who want to get away from the cities and enjoy the true Italian experience. Helen and Jimmy are there to give you sightseeing guidance using Helen's very detailed guidebook but also allow you to enjoy the peace and tranquillity you can only get up in the Italian Mountains.
