Make a holiday rental home or farmhouse in Macerino, Italy your home away from home

Macerino is a frazione (parish) of Acquasparta, and lies around 15km from its commune. The official census figures list the population of the hamlet at just seven people, though in reality this swells during summer months when foreign visitors hit town in search of their perfect rural holiday destination. That is not to say that the village becomes over-run, however, simply that you must book in advance if you wish to stay in this delightful 16th century hilltop village.

Things to do in Macerino, Italy

There are two public squares in the centre of the village, the main one being Piazza del Pieve. Here you will find the parish church of S. Biagio, which is open to the public and houses a number of fine paintings and other works of art. There is another church in to be found, namely the Madonna del Fiore (though this is not always open to the public), and the village is great for a lazy stroll on a hot summers day.

Amenities in the village are limited, with only a single bar to be found. Shops, cafes and restaurants are all found within close proximity, however, and touring the small towns and villages of this unspoilt region are what a holiday in Umbria is all about. Acquasparta is the administrative centre of the local area, and has much more in the way of amenities, though the town is 15km away, and the use of a hire car is almost essential when staying in this especially rural part of Italy.

What else you do in Macerino is purely down to personal preference. Some visitors like to walk and hike in the surrounding countryside, taking in the unspoilt views that the hilltop location offers. Others are happy to relax in the confines of their Macerino holiday rental accommodation, watching the sun set with a glass of local wine in hand. Horse riding, mountain biking and fishing are just some of the many other options that can be enjoyed in this rich and varied region.

Excellent Private Villa

5 of 5
Stayed for 2 weeks at this lovely villa, very tastefully decorated and well equipped, with a gym downstairs for guest to use, and free unlimited wifi (fast enough to keep the youtubers happy). Well situated with lovely views on the outskirts of the small quiet village of Massa Martana, perfect for exploring the local area including Todi and Marmore Falls, well worth a visit when the falls are turned on as well as near enough to Rome 1.5hrs, Assisi 45mins and Perugia 1hr. The owners lives nearby but not on site and is very friendly and helpful, recommending local restuarants and tourist attractions and dealing with any issues. We ate in the local restaurant (5 mins car drive) Il Gattopardo and shopped at the local supermarket (2 mins by car) well stocked and no need to travel further afield. Would definitely recommend and stay here again if visiting Umbria.

Way better than the site suggests - a real gem (both the villa and Elisa, the amazing manager!)

Villa Louisa is a wonderful place to stay in so many ways. Firstly, it is really hidden away down about a kilometre of gravel track; entirely peaceful and private. The villa itself is well-finished with pretty much everything you could need, even down to four sets of cutlery, an ice-cream maker and sky on-demand movies. The beds are good quality and the showers work well. The pool is wonderful, not too cold (as so many are) and not too deep, allowing the kids to play safely. The gardens are extensive and multi-level - much bigger than the photos show. We were given three or four fresh eggs every day from the chickens and guinea fowl (which don't crow at dawn, by the way) and tomatoes, courgettes, aubergines and even a butternut squash from the garden vegetable patch - we didn't buy eggs or veg for the entire stay. However, the biggest asset of Villa Louise isn't the physical property itself, lovely though it is, but the exceptional manager Elisa. She came to meet us at a restaurant she had recommended on our first day and then drove with us to show us the villa. She helped out with every question, even getting a neighbour to escort us how when we were lost nearby one night with a flat tyre. She left us a lovely welcome package, brought pastries and croissants twice in the early morning, left on the outside table for us to find upon awakening, gave us a lovely private tour of Spoleto and even brought a bottle of craft beer made by her boyfriend as a parting gift. At the same time, she was professional throughout, responding quickly to a blocked shower or a profusion of flies we had created by leaving the doors open. She has picked four restaurants to recommend to guests, some with discounts for us, and we ate in three, all of which were excellent. And all with charm and a happy smile! It made the difference between a good stay and a great one. Any downsides? The sitting room and especially kitchen are a bit dark at night and a few more kids games would be welcome. Not big issues though.
