Make a holiday apartment in Livorno your home away from home

Tuscany’s third-largest city is also known as “Little Venice” for its extensive system of canals that are navigable. This charming seaside town entices the visitor with historic sites, water-based family activities, unique shopping experiences and a fascinating cultural scene. Livorno has a working port and is Tuscany’s gateway to the Mediterranean. Situated just 18 kilometres from Pisa where holiday rentals are also available, many visitors to Tuscany visit Livorno to relax by the sea after days spent sightseeing in the area.

The best way to unwind and enjoy this time away is with a holiday apartment in Livorno. HomeAway’s collection of fully furnished holiday properties wrap the visitor up in a host of everyday creature comforts. From studios to three-bedroom apartments, party sizes of up to seven people can be accommodated. Spacious four-bedroom Livorno holiday villas can cater for larger groups of holidaymakers.

Things to do

-Family activities: The colourful fish and marine creatures of the city aquarium will keep the whole family entertained for hours. Above the water, a boat trip along the canals is a superb way to experience the city and its sights. Along the way, tourists will see old churches, warehouses and noblemen’s houses. Tours are held several times throughout the day.

-Historic monuments: Livorno is home to a number of buildings of architectural beauty. The 17th-century cathedral, dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi was completely destroyed during World War II, but has been rebuilt as a reproduction of the original. At the north end of the old port area is Fortezza Vecchia (Old Fortress), a 16th-century structure dominated by a squat tower. Next to the fort is one of Livorno's most famous sights, the statue of Quattro Mori (the four moors) erected in 1617.

-Museums and galleries: Visitors with a holiday apartment in Livorno who possess a passion for the arts can appreciate the work of Italian artists in the Museum of Contemporary Art in the southeast part of the old town. The Museo Civico displays works by the Macchiaioli, a group of mid-19th-century painters. Other popular museums include Museo Mascagnano that houses memorabilia and documents of the composer Pietro Mascagni, who lived here.

-Shopping: Via Grande traverses the centre of Livorno and its modern shopping arcades offer excellent high-street shopping opportunities. Inside the 17th-century “New Venice” district are a number of small independent stores where shoppers can purchase curiosities and unique souvenirs. To sample the fresh produce of the region, there is a covered food market, open Monday-Saturday mornings.

-Day trips: The port at Livorno provides numerous ferry trips to Elba and other Tuscan Islands. Some of the ferries take cars as well as foot passengers. The hills and countryside around Livorno are fascinating to explore and encompass old villages, parks and wildlife reserves that are home to badgers, roe and fallow deer.

Weather in Livorno

Livorno’s position by the coast gives it a mild climate through most of the year, with summers that are a couple of degrees cooler than inland Tuscany. July and August are the hottest months and the very warm weather can extend into the second half of September. Winters are warmer than many other parts of Tuscany and snow is rare. March and April often attract the most rain.

Travel to Livorno

The nearest airport to Livorno is Pisa's Galileo Galilei Airport which is approximately 28 kilometres away. To reach Livorno holiday villas from there, visitors can take a bus, hire car or taxi. Trains from the airport go into Pisa and from there it’s a change of trains to get to Livorno Centrale Station. Livorno is on the Rome–La Spezia line and also has connections to Florence.

Amazing tuscan holiday

5 of 5
We spent in this house 7 days and we visited Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Siena and San Gimignano. Livorno is a really nice base to visit all the Tuscan beauty because it is in the middle of everything and it is on the coast with the advantage of fresh temperature. The house is very comfortable and with a marvellous garden with a great seaview and sunset, the kitchen complete of everything. The house is really amazing and I can tell that it is one of the best place I have ever found. Thank you!

Had a great stay in Livorno, travelling with children. The apartment suited us perfectly - very spacious and well appointed with everything we needed. We didn't use the cooker / washing machine etc as we were only staying briefly but very useful if you're staying for longer. Good Wi-Fi connection too. The owner was very helpful - met us at the apartment to let us in, show us around and also share some local knowledge which was very welcome. Great location too - easy to find by car and only a short walk down to the seafront. We would definitely stay again if we make it back to Livorno.
