Make a holiday rental home or villa in Licciana Nardi, Italy your home away from home

The village of Licciana Nardi is now one of the most popular holiday rental destinations in the Massa Carrara province of Tuscany, with an ever-increasing number of holidaymakers discovering this formerly forgotten spot high on the course of the Magra River. With holiday rental accommodation in the towns of Massa and Carrara limited in their numbers, the cottages and townhouses in Licciana Nardi make a great alternative for exploring this under-rated region.

Things to do in Licciana Nardi, Italy

The landscape around Licciana Nardi is rich and varied, with flat areas, small hills and challenging mountain terrain all to be found. This makes the village a good base for outdoor pursuits, as it offers something for everyone, and the hardest part is deciding whether you will explore on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.

The most important historical site in the village of Licciana Nardi is the 12th century Monti Castle, though unfortunately it is no longer open to the public unless you book an appointment in advance. There are several old buildings you can visit, however, including the beautiful parish church - parts of which date back to the 11th century.

When it comes to eating and drinking you will be spoilt for choice. Tuscany is famous for its cuisine, and the local winter dish of the Lunigiana area is torta d’erbi – a pie made with onions, leeks, chard and other vegetables. A lighter version can also be enjoyed during spring and summer months. Dishes such as these can be purchased in the local restaurants, and there are a couple of excellent dining options in the neighbouring village of Pontebosio, just 2km up the river.

Places to visit on holiday in Licciana Nardi, Italy

Massa (10km) is the administrative centre of the region and a town famous for its marble production. Sites of interest include the 15th century Malaspina Castle – which overlooks the town from a nearby hill, and the town cathedral. If you decide to hire a car and venture further away from your base, consider a visit to Lerici (33km), a picture-postcard town on the Italian Riviera.

Weather in Licciana Nardi, Italy

Summer is understandably the hottest season in which to visit Licciana Nardi, and the mercury can rise to above 30C during this time of the year. If you prefer things a little bit cooler you may wish to stay during spring or early autumn, when temperatures above 20C are still the norm and there is a crisp, refreshing breeze in the air.

Flights to Licciana Nardi, Italy

Licciana Nardi can be reached through a Ryanair flight from London Stansted to Parma Airport (PMF), which is located 100km to the north-east. Another option is to fly to Pisa Airport (PSA), 91km away, which is also served by Ryanair, as well as British Airways, Thomson Airways and Jet2.com. Peretola Airport (FLR, 106km) is a third option.

a wonderful stay in Lunigiana in an absolutely fantastic house

5 of 5
We have spent a week in Lunigiana (Crispiano). The house has a medieval origin, nicely restored on an upscale level. A very quiet location with a fantastic view. A very comfortable house, cosy, tidy, big enough and very well equipped. The caretaker Alfio was very friendly and has provided immediate help for all our requests. In a tiny village downhill is located a family restaurant with a very good cuisine and friendly atmosphere.

Rural hideaway, stunning surroundings & pool

4 of 5
We really enjoyed our stay at Mulino della Concia. It's in amazing location and it was lovely discovering all the different fruit trees, wild flowers and herbs surrounding the property and of course the waterfall. My 6 and 8 year olds were in heaven. The garden and pool area is excellent. We really could have done with prior notice of the steep and narrow nature of the road leading to the property. It frankly left us all quite shaken when we first arrived & we wondered if we'd ever get our 7 seater hire car out again - we did get used to it eventually but prior warning would have eased the whole experience. A mention of the dishwasher, hair dryer & washing machine (even through the latter didn't work) would have been very useful. The shower and kitchen sink leaked and the mattress in the blue bedroom is not very comfortable. These are quibbles which did not impair our stay but are worth noting for future visitors. Mainly the reason I've given four stars. The village isn't safe to walk to really so the description is misleading - we did discover an overgrown pathway that took us most of the way there but you still need to negotiate a perilous bend on the narrow road. Despite this it has to be said Silicagnana has everything you could need - a small but very well stocked, reasonable and very friendly Alimentairi, a bakery & butchers. The property owner Alfredo and his daughter Chiara were just lovely. The owners of the riding centre that backs on to the property were similarly very friendly and obliging. Because of the horses you will need to stock up on insect repellent and a bite treatment pen. Horse flies were a bit of a problem. The Friends of Tuscany advice sheet was really useful particularly for restaurant recommendations - the food in the area is excellent il Pozzo and Trattoria Bonini were standouts. We would just add L'aia di Piero in Castenuovo as a lunch stop and to stock up on delicious charcuterie, pre-prepared salads and wine for a supper at home. All very reasonable. Also the gelateria Fuori dal Centro nearby is excellent. Lucca is a must, stunningly beautiful and a lovely counterpoint to the mountains of Garfagnana. Overall Garfagnana was rugged but beautiful, the evening light was stunning. The people were lovely and the food outstanding.

Wonderful property - highly recommended!

5 of 5
We've just returned from a week at Casa Sillara and wow...what a fabulous house! This is the first time in many years that we've rented a property and I'm glad to say we definitely chose the right place for our family. The whole house has been very well thought out, nicely furnished and was very clean on arrival. A nice touch was leaving us some beers and a bottle of prosecco for our arrival. The kitchen is fully equipped a with everything you could want. We all loved the pool and the great loungers... so much so we found it hard to tear ourselves away from it! There's plenty of places to explore locally and you're also not too far away from Lucca and Pisa. For a true, authentic italian experience ask to be booked into the local restaurant, the owner's daughter speaks good english and helped us make the right meal choices (don't expect a menu) - wonderful food and reasonably priced. David and his wife Ana are there for any emergencies and were a great source of information. Great communication with Sarah the owner and all our questions were answered quickly. Don't hesitate in booking this truly wonderful house. Thanks Sarah and we'll definitely book again in the future.
