Make a holiday villa in Lecco your home away from home

Lecco sits on the most southerly point of the eastern shore of Lake Como and is surrounded by mountains. The historic old centre is characterised by its neat and narrow lanes that are lined by both old and modern buildings. No matter where you turn there are either mountain or lake views. The lake, Italy’s third largest, is the biggest draw here, offering numerous aquatic activities and the mountainous backdrop attracts hikers and climbers.

With so much beautiful scenery to enjoy, HomeAway has holiday villas in Lecco that offer panoramic views and provide easy access to the lake, mountains and town centre. Some are luxurious, prestige holiday properties boasting indoor or outdoor swimming pools. Lecco holiday apartments also enjoy good positions close to the water and mountains, and feature terraces or balconies to breathe in the fresh air and admire the vistas. All are equipped with such amenities as dishwashers, microwaves and coffee makers. In an area that has been blessed by nature, HomeAway has many other Lake Como holiday rentals in places such as Nesso and Gera Lario.

Things to do

-Sports: For watersports enthusiasts, Lake Como is an aquatic paradise with sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and kitesurfing on offer. Back on dry land there are several paths for cyclists around the lake. The Grigne and Resegone Mountains can be trekked and hiked. During the winter there's skiing on the slopes of Piani di Bobbio, di Artavaggio and delle Betulle.

-Historic monuments: There have been settlements here since before the arrival of the Romans. Although few traces of the ancient past remain there are many structures that are hundreds of years old. The Bridge Azzone Visconti, also called Old Bridge was built between 1336 and 1338. Inside the 18th-century Basilica of San Nicolò is the 12th-centiury Chapel of the Baptistery, part of the original church that was on this site.

-Food and drink: In Lecco and neighbouring lakeside towns and villages, fish and seafood dishes dominate. They include tagliolini with crab pulp and fish soup with saffron. With a holiday villa in Lecco tourists can visit a number of eateries that have terraces with lake and mountain views.

-Museums: Villa Manzoni is an elegant 17th-century residence that’s now a museum and art gallery. On the ground floor is the Manzoni Museum with grand rooms decorated with period furniture from the early part of the 19th century. The second floor hosts the town’s art gallery with more than 2,000 paintings and engravings from the 18th century to the present day. Palazzo Belgiojoso houses an archaeological museum.

A lovely stay in a house full of character

5 of 5
We traveled as a family with 2 young kids and had a great time at Stefy's house that is located within 10-15 minutes' walk from the historic centre of Bellagio. The house is fantastic, it has been restored to a high standard and is a pleasure to live in. Stefy is a lovely host and provided us with lots of tips around where to go/what to do in the area. Be sure to take a ferry ride to Mennagio and Varenna, it's such a treat. Latteria di Bellagio that sells fantastic local cheeses, salamis and fresh milk is just 3 minutes walk from the house and is a must visit. The only minor downside for families with young kids is two quite steep staircases in the house so you have to be extra vigilant with the little ones.

Spectacular views and great host

5 of 5
Luciana has been a great host throughout our stay and always responds to correspondence very quickly. When we arrived at the house our breath was taken away with the spectacular views of the mountains and Lake Como from the terrace and with the substantial nature, location and grounds of the house. The kitchen is very well equipped - no oven but perfectly OK with just the hob and microwave for cooking plus the microwave has a 'crisp' function and there is a barbeque available. There is also a fridge/freezer. Luciana left some provisions for us - water, wine, fruit and biscuits which was a nice touch. It is well worth the walk around Civenna where there are panoramic views of Lake Como. Bellagio is only 7km away and we highly recommend the botanical gardens at Villa Melzi which is my favourite place in the world, on the lake itself with amazing views in a peaceful setting.
