Make a holiday rental property or villa in Lecce, Italy your home away from home

Lecce is a hugely lavish and elegant city in Puglia province (Italy’s ‘heel’) of southern Italy. The ornate carvings which adorn many fine buildings in the area are made of local sandstone, which is so easy to carve that it has spawned an entirely original style of masonry, barocco leccese. Although it is not usually on the well beaten tourist route through Italy, Lecce is a city of magnificence and splendour, with undeniable charm.

Things to do on holiday in Lecce, Italy

There are a whole host of Roman and Greek treasures throughout the town and the area in general. The Piazza Sant’Oronzo is the most important Roman site you can see from a self catering Lecce holiday rental property. The massive 25,000 seat amphitheatre and the church of Santa Croce make for an amazing sight, well worth investigation from any holiday accommodation in the Lecce region. The old centre is absolutely filled with places of interest and lovely old churches, so you will never be short of fascinating cultural and historical attractions from a Lecce villa or apartment.

Regularly described as a ‘small Florence without the tourists’, Lecce is an art-lover’s dream. There are a whole host of excellent galleries, and during the summer months, there are two open-air theatres which put on plays with famous international actors, singers and performers. The opera season lasts from February until May, and there are plenty of top-class restaurants in which to enjoy an elegant meal afterwards.

The countryside which surrounds the Lecce area is an activity hot spot for those who love the great outdoors. Whether you are hoping to enjoy hill walking, mountain climbing, horse riding or mountaineering, there will be ample opportunities from a self catering villa in Lecce. The coast is not short of entertainment options either. There are numerous sailing schools and water sports centres along the coast, with excellent conditions for sailing, deep sea fishing trips, windsurfing and scuba diving.

Places to visit on holiday in Lecce, Italy

Near-by Gallipoli is the seafood capital of the area, having attracted some of the finest chefs in Italy to its restaurants. Jutting out on a spit into the Mediterranean waters, Gallipoli is an ancient town with a very maritime atmosphere, which charms everyone who visits. The stunning combination of beaches, monuments and delicious cuisine make taking a self catering property here almost irresistible.

The rural, coastal village of Tricase is a beautiful destination tucked into the tree covered hills of the Lecce coast. Although there are no sandy beaches around Tricase, there are some magnificent flat rocks from which to swim and snorkel, and there are some great coastal paths to explore.

Weather in Lecce, Italy

Temperatures during the summer months can get remarkably hot. During the months of July and August, temperatures average over 30°C, with daily peaks often breaking the 40°C mark. If this seems overly hot, temperatures are warm but not scorching between May and June and again from September until mid-October, when temperatures average above 20°C. Winters are amazingly mild, with temperatures almost never dipping below 10°C during the day.

Travel to Lecce, Italy

The proximity of Brindisi Airport (BDS) 45 minutes to the north of a Lecce villa makes Lecce holidays easy to start. Flights to Lecce via Brindisi are provided by Ryanair fromLondonStansted (STN) on a regular basis. There are other options for reaching a Lecce holiday home from the UK, but a flight to Brindisi is by far the most convenient.

A lovely peaceful chalet

5 of 5
Our family - 2 boys aged 8 and 15 spent a wonderful week in Pepe and Symo's lovely house. While the house is small it has everything you need and was extremely comfortable (I loved the tiles in the shower room!) The weather was very hot when we were there so we spent a most of time at the house in the large sun shaded garden! The beaches can be very busy so it was lovely to come back to the quiet warm pool in the evenings for a swim. Lecce is a beautiful town and we went there most evenings for dinner - we had some lovely meals. Pepe and Symo were most welcoming - there was a welcome pack of chilled wine, tomatoes, mozzarella, olive oil.olives etc. Symo also cooked us a lovely pasta dinner the night before we left. Pepe and Symo are very kind and considerate hosts. Thank you Pepe and Symo (the boys miss the cat!).

A very comfortable, quiet and relaxing villa with fantastic hosts, just on the outskirts of Lecce.

We arrived to be greeted by Matretta and Carlo. The property is a very well equipped, large and comfortable villa. The pool area was lovely and there was even a small play area with swings to keep our children happy. Carlo and Maretta are wonderful hosts and very welcoming. The property is only a short drive from some local shops and 15min to the centre of Lecce. There is a shopping mall complex 11min away on the motorway which has everything you need. We have loved being there and would happily go back again.
