Make a holiday rental home or self catering villa in Lake Orta, Italy your home away from home

The famous shores of Lake Orta are considered the most romantic setting in the whole of Italy. The quiet beauty is unrivalled, with steep forested slopes diving into the still waters of the lake, which lies in the deep countryside on the Piedmont boarder in northern Italy. Lake Orta is one of those amazing destinations that catches people between two minds; on one hand, you want to tell everyone about this sensational destination, yet, at the same time, you don’t want anyone else to discover your favourite secret. Property in Lake Orta is extremely sought after, especially for weddings and romantic escapes. Lake Orta is the smallest of the famous Italian Lakes, but there is an unrivalled sense of tranquillity on a Lake Orta family holiday.

Things to do on holiday in Lake Orta, Italy

When you first arrive at a self catering Lake Orta villa it may take some time to get over the sheer beauty of the area. One of the best ways to explore Lake Orta is to rent a row boat and head out into the still waters of the Lake. Rowing serenely across the lakes, images of the surrounding mountains are broken only by the picturesque houses and churches which cling to rock outcrops along the lake’s shores. Windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing and swimming are greatly encouraged in Lake Orta too.

The countryside around the lake is a haven for walking, riding and mountain biking holidays. There are riding stables and bike hire centres around the shores, located in the larger tourist centres around the lake. There is even a golf course within reach of a self catering Lake Orta villa, offering a taxing 18 holes to anyone who cares to try their swing.

If you do not feel like taking to the hills or boating across the lake from your Lake Orta property rental, there is a huge amount to see and do around the shores. The many beautiful settlements on the banks of the Lake are filled with wonderful religious monuments adorned with Italian frescos, beautiful luxury villas and some hugely atmospheric cafes and restaurants from which to relax and soak in the view.

Places to visit on holiday in Lake Orta, Italy

The island of San Giulio which lies in the middle of Lake Orta is a delightful place to stay. Surrounded by the dark waters of the lake, there couldn’t be a more idyllic setting for a romantic holiday.

The town of Orta San Giulio on the banks of Lake Orta has been known as the ‘jewel of the lake’ for many generations. The village makes essential viewing from any self catering property in Lake Orta, Italy, as its cream coloured houses and incredible church hanging to a rock outcrop cannot fail to charm visitors.

Weather in Lake Orta, Italy

Mornings often see Lake Orta shrouded in mist, adding to the atmosphere, but don’t worry, the mist soon burns off. During the summer months, temperatures during the day can reach the mid 30’s (°C), and people can be seen swimming from almost every beach. During the winter months, temperatures plummet to an average of around 8°C, but the crisp air and snow capped peaks just make the area even more romantic!

Travel to Lake Orta, Italy

Malpensa Airport (MXP) in Milan is located within 80kms of a self catering Lake Orta property, and receives direct flights from a huge range of British airports. There are bus and train services to the town of Omegna which stands at the top of the lake in a valley between the mountains. There are car hire options from Milan Airport, and the drive to a Lake Orta property is both relaxing and highly scenic.

A charming place to stay on beautiful Lake Orta

5 of 5
We loved every minute of our stay at Pietro and Maria's apartment. The property is set in a beautiful orchard and just up the hill from Orta San Giulio (it was an easy 25 min walk to the centre). The place was spotless and whilst simple, had everything you could possibly need for your stay. The terrace at the back is huge and has the most wonderful views. The highlight though had to be our hosts who went above and beyond to make our stay special, with deliveries of home grown fruit and veg from the garden (delicious) and all the information we could need for our stay. We just hope that our very basic Italian adequately communicated our appreciation! Lake Orta itself is breathtakingly beautiful and much quieter than some of the bigger lakes, this was the perfect place to base ourselves (9 nights) to explore the wider areas (including a day trip to Milan, Stresa and hiking in the Alps). We would absolutely recommend the place and the lovely hosts.

Property scrupulously clean and well equipped.Very warm welcome from host. Superb peaceful location

5 of 5
As a family of five with three adult children we all really enjoyed a great holiday and would love to repeat the visit. The apartment was very spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean with wonderful lake views from the windows. The property was in an outstanding location right beside Lake Orta. One of the highlights of the holiday was the easy access to the lake from the beautiful garden, via the boathouse which had paved steps and a rope handrail leading directly into the water. The lake was very clean and clear and we swam two or three times a day. Wonderful! It was only a five minute walk to get to several small shops and restaurants in the picturesque old town. The most important being a delicious ice cream shop. Boats at the town square could take you to other locations on Lake Orta. The setting of the apartment was so idyllic and peaceful that we were content to stay in the garden by the lake a lot of time rather than do too much exploring by car. Stefano was a most welcoming host. He went out of his way to be most helpful to us and we really enjoyed hearing about the history of the building and his family connection to it. We would have no hesitation in strongly recommending this property.
