The quiet beauty is unrivalled, with steep forested slopes diving into the still waters of the lake, which lies in the deep countryside on the Piedmont boarder in northern Italy. Lake Orta is one of those amazing destinations that catches people between two minds; on one hand, you want to tell everyone about this sensational destination, yet, at the same time, you don’t want anyone else to discover your favourite secret. Property in Lake Orta is extremely sought after, especially for weddings and romantic escapes. Lake Orta is the smallest of the famous Italian Lakes, but there is an unrivalled sense of tranquillity on a Lake Orta family holiday.

Things to do on holiday in Lake Orta, Italy

When you first arrive at a self catering Lake Orta villa it may take some time to get over the sheer beauty of the area. One of the best ways to explore Lake Orta is to rent a row boat and head out into the still waters of the Lake. Rowing serenely across the lakes, images of the surrounding mountains are broken only by the picturesque houses and churches which cling to rock outcrops along the lake’s shores. Windsurfing, canoeing, water skiing and swimming are greatly encouraged in Lake Orta too.

The countryside around the lake is a haven for walking, riding and mountain biking holidays. There are riding stables and bike hire centres around the shores, located in the larger tourist centres around the lake. There is even a golf course within reach of a self catering Lake Orta villa, offering a taxing 18 holes to anyone who cares to try their swing.

If you do not feel like taking to the hills or boating across the lake from your Lake Orta property rental, there is a huge amount to see and do around the shores. The many beautiful settlements on the banks of the Lake are filled with wonderful religious monuments adorned with Italian frescos, beautiful luxury villas and some hugely atmospheric cafes and restaurants from which to relax and soak in the view.

Fantastic location

4 of 5
Very comfortable, well equipped and attractive apartment. We particularly liked the different living spaces indoors and outside, the comfortable beds, the mosquito screens, and of course the views. Even when the weather was poor, the opportunity to enjoy a changing landscape was great. Only hassle was the entry to the parking spot, doable in a Zafira, but not exactly comfortable.

A wonderful converted boathouse, with high quality breakfasts and daily cleaning service.

The two of us had a great 9 day stay at the boathouse, which is right on the lake. The breakfasts are truly wonderful and Anna kindly accommodated my wife's gluten-free needs. The boathouse is converted to a high specification. There is plenty of areas for relaxing, bbq and swimming (or pedaloing) in the lake. We loved sitting on the balcony and watching the scenic views, boats and ducks. The house is very well equipped and cleaned daily. Marco and Anna's jack russel dogs kept us company, but never pestered.
