Just returned from a lovely week at Villa Nuraghe. The villa is in an idyllic spot, very quiet and tranquil with only the faint, distant tinkle of cow bells to listen to. The local town of Perfugas has everything you need, both supermarkets are good, Crai is better if you want more recognisable brands but we used Eurospin mostly. The wine and cheese shops are a must! We also ate in the Pizzeria opposite Eurospin, fantastic pizza at a good price, takeaway and eat-in, but be warned they didn't take cards when we were there but there were plenty of cash points nearby. The beaches are lovely and we were often the only ones on them (we went mid sept so slightly out of season), our favourites were San Pietro and Badesi. The villa is spacious, the grounds extensive, you can find a shady or sunny spot somewhere whatever the time of day, also saw some lovely sunsets from the terrace. The villa and bedrooms stay very cool and the dining area outside is lovely, we BBQ'd most nights. The owner, Malcolm, has thought of everything in terms of facilities, utensils etc and was extremely helpful and responsive to any queries we had. For those that haven't been to Sardinia before it is vast! We took our bicycles and cycled most days. The villa is ideal for cyclists as there is plenty of secure storage and outside space, especially now that the additional accommodation is nearly complete. Sardinia is very hilly with little flat areas so you are up and down all day on some lovely sweeping roads. Some of the road surfaces were a bit bumpy but you just need to be selective about the road choices; the SS/SR roads seemed to be lovely smooth tarmac whereas the provincial SP roads were a bit more hit/miss. Nothing that Google maps/Street view cant help you with. The gradients are very consistent so less "rolling" than somewhere like Mallorca and some of the climbs are long but spectacular once you get to the top, especially around the wind farms. Generally we found the Italian drivers considerate although a little impatient at times but no worse than the UK and the roads are SO quiet once you get out of the towns that you barely see anyone else. The Sardinians are also a very friendly bunch & make you feel welcome everywhere. Our favourite cycle areas were around Castelsardo, Tergu, Badesi, Sedini, Nulvi, Tula and there is a really long (15km) climb from the lake at Tula up to Tempio which is a very scenic road and extremely quiet. All in all a fab 2 weeks!
