  • Good base in peaceful location
    4 of 5

We enjoyed our week in September in the hamlet of Pioglio, which is on the edge of the village of Roppolo. The self-contained accommodation is part of the ground floor of a large older property also occupied by members of the English owners' family and has secure parking behind an electric gate. Inside, there is a large kitchen/diner/lounge area and leading off that, two bedrooms with a bathroom between. Outside, there is a north-facing decked area where you can sit in shade with views across farmland towards the local castle. We are not sun worshippers but for those who are, the deckchairs provided can easily be moved into the sun on the decking and the owners' garden and swimming pool are a few yards away. The kitchen is well equipped and the windows there and in the main bedroom benefit from netting so they can be left open when it is hot without inviting insect company. We chose the area because of its good location and it is well connected - a few minutes by car from the A4 motorway at Santhia and Santhia is also a junction station on the railway with a fairly quick roughly hourly train service to both Milan and Turin. Our visiting priorities were Turin and Aosta, but we also visited Milan and Ivrea. Santhia was also useful on a shopping level - we found 4 supermarkets there including a Lidl with a large savoury bakery range so that we could buy lunch for our journeys. We also checked out the local lakeside facilities at Viverone but unfortunately although it was only the second week of September, most of those had closed at the end of the school holidays. The owners' family were welcoming and helpful when we encountered a couple of minor problems. The only real drawback I noted was that because this is a village location, the internet is poor - certainly not suitable for streaming for example, although the British Sky TV partly made up for that because we could get news and entertainment from home. You also need to step over what I assume was the base of a wall to get from the lounge to the other rooms, so some with mobility issues would struggle with that. But for most people looking for a country base to travel from, this is a good bet.

Biella is full of surprises. We found the people to be lovely. Would definitely do this again. Owners were so helpful and kind! The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is no sitting room, otherwise, the property is awesome!
