Make a holiday villa in Guardia Grande your home away from home

Guardia Grande is a quaint village located approximately 10 kilometres from the larger settlement of Alghero, on the stunning island of Sardinia, Italy. The perfect place for a quiet family holiday or some private time away with your significant other, a Guardia Grande holiday villa provides easy access to all of the regions superb sights and attractions. Owing to its inland location, the township can also serve as a great base from which to explore the rest of the island. HomeAway offers a selection of excellent holiday villas in Guardia Grande, all well maintained and will all mod cons.

Things to do

You will never be at a loss for things to see and do whilst staying in Guardia Grande, as the village is well positioned, with the beach, the mountains, and larger tourist centres, all within close proximity. It is however advantageous to hire a car, if you would like to really explore all that Sardinia has to offer.

-Wine tasting is a great way to spend an afternoon (or a few afternoons) in Sardinia, as numerous great vineyards and cellar doors are located within close proximity of Guardia Grande holiday villas. One such establishment is the Cantina Santa Maria La Palma, which lays just 6 kilometres from Guardia Grande. This award winning winery allows you to sample a wide range of red and white wines, in addition to authentic Italian grappa, although choosing your favourite to take home can be difficult!

-Neptune’s Cave, situated approximately 14 kilometres from Guardia Grande, is one of a series of grottos located throughout the island. As the name (Neptune) suggests, the cavern overlooks the ocean, having formed in a vertical cliff face. This means that you may choose to visit the site either by boat (boat tours run roughly every hour from Alghero), or by road, which requires tackling the 656 stairs leading down the cliff face. Either way however, you’re guaranteed the adventure of a lifetime.

-Dolphin and whale watching is an extremely relaxing way to pass the time on Sardinia, and the coastal areas of the Capo Caccia National Park, just 8 kilometres from holiday homes in Guardia Grande are a great place to begin. You may also like to organise a tour aboard one of the professional dolphin and whale watching vessels in the region, in order to get closer to the area’s beautiful marine mammals.

-The beach is always a great place to hang out whilst on holiday, and the region around Guardia Grande boasts some great quiet seaside locations. If you’re interested in trying your hand at some of the challenging water sports on offer such as kayaking and windsurfing however, you may need to head to some of the more popular beach locations including Maria Pia beach, Le Bombarde beach and Mugoni beach near Alghero.

-Diving is something that every visitor to Guardia Grande should try at least once, as the coastal waters of Sardinia are crystal clear and teeming with fantastic marine life. One of the benefits of having a Guardia Grande holiday home for diving enthusiasts however, is the settlement’s proximity to the Capo Caccia National Park, which offers some exciting cave diving opportunities.

Weather in Guardia Grande

The weather in Guardia Grande is typical of that in Mediterranean regions, with mild wet winters and warm dry summers being the norm. Peak tourist season consequently takes place during the summer months, although securing your holiday villa in Guardia Grande in the off season can be beneficial, as the region is much quieter and the accommodation deals are often much more reasonable!

Getting to Guardia Grande

Guardia Grande is extremely simple to reach, as it is located only 10 kilometres from the international airport in Alghero. You may consequently choose to get to your holiday accommodation by taxi, shuttle bus or hire car, although regardless of what method you choose, you should be relaxing in the warm Italian sun within roughly 30 minutes of your arrival on the island.

Wonderful Villa for a family holiday

5 of 5
We are just back from a two week holiday at the Villa in Alghero. We are a family of 5 with 3 children (11,9,5). The hosts are a lovely family who couldn't do more to help. They met us and took us to the house so we could find it easily with them. They had to come out a couple of times as the gas went off and the wi fi went down in a storm and they were with us very quickly and sorted things out and came regular to clean the pool. The villa is very comfortable for 5 or 6 people. There is also a sofa bed. There is air conditioning in the bedrooms but even though it was very hot outside during the day the rooms were not too hot at night. There is a good TV and sofa area and a kitchen which is quite well equipped. The outside space is lovely. We spent a number of days just at the pool when feeling lazy. You are in the country side so there are a number of dogs nearby but we only had one day where it was annoying. The house is about 10 minutes from town and the beach. The beach is beautiful. We went to Santa Maria Pia most days. The beach is busy but not as busy as we thought it would be be. Beautiful sand and clear seas. Good cafes serving sandwiches on the beach. You do have to pay for parking which you can do by card and is very easy. There is plenty of parking. Children loved hiring a pedalo. We tried to go to one of the smaller beaches but it is so busy there that you are sitting on top of people unless you get there early. We also went to the inflatable water park up the road towards Fertillia which the children loved. 3 hours is enough as it is hard work for the children and for us to keep up with them and not get injured! Alghero old town is lovely. Lots of good restaurants which we would advise to book. Use Trip Advisor. Parking was OK in our first week but going into August you need to be in town by 7pm otherwise parking is a real issue. We had to give up one evening. Pizzeria Lu Furat good cheap pizza. Pizzeria Le 100 also really good. Sartoria Del Gusto did lovely pasta. Nautilus was recommended but not really for children. We went to Il Corallo which had lovely fish and pasta and slightly more upmarket. Lots of fantastic ice cream shops in town. The one up beside pizzeria le 100 was our favourite. On our one cloudy afternoon we went on the town tour which goes every 30 minutes. We loved the house and the area. Would definitely come back again.

Damiano and his family are so friendly. The villa worked very well for us and was comfortable, clean and spacious - couldn’t keep the daughter out of the pool! Thank you, we look forward to coming again. Matthew & Emma
