Make a holiday rental home or villa in Grottaferrata, Italy your home away from home

Grottaferrata is a small town on the lower slopes of the Alban Hills of Lazio, 21km south-east of the centre of Rome. Along with several other towns and villages, Grottaferrata makes up the Castelli Romani – a group of comunes known for their beautiful rural locations near the lakes of Nemi and Albano. Grottaferrata is revered for its 11th century abbey, excellent restaurants and high-quality accommodation.

Things to do in Grottaferrata, Italy

A Grottaferrata villa is a great choice of base for exploring both the rural and urban parts of the Rome province, and can help you to successfully combine activities and relaxation periods of your holiday. The town has a number of sites of historical interest, with the main one being the Abbey of Santa Maria di Grottaferrata - parts of which date back to the 11th century. The abbey displays a high standard of architecture and is notable for its library of over 50,000 ancient volumes.

The Castelli Romani is well-known for its cuisine, and Grottaferrata has a number of restaurants where you can sample the local fare. Traditional specialities include thin and crusty pizzas, roasted pork and variations on that old Italian favourite – spaghetti. This can all be washed down with a glass of two of the excellent local wine. A typical meal will consist of a starter, a pasta dish, a main meal, dessert and coffee, and you can expect to pay considerably less in Grottaferrata than you would do in an eatery in the centre of Rome.

Places to visit on holiday in Grottaferrata, Italy

Rome (21km), known as the ‘Eternal City’, is one of the most beautiful and ancient cities in the world, and at least a few days in the capital are a necessity during a stay in Grottaferrata. The other towns and villages of the Castelli Romani region are also well worth exploring, with neighbouring Frascati (3km) and Marino (5km) both famous for their white wines and just two of your many day trip options.

Simply Amazing...! Lifetime Memories

5 of 5
We will never forget the beauty, the staff, the food, the location and support provided by Adriana and her team which provided the backdrop for our Italian family reunion. My grandfather, Ernesto, was born in Sora, Italy in 1890. He left for America in 1906 to find a "better life". Actually, he was leaving his abusive step-father whom he would watch abuse his mother. He left his mother and sister behind, vowing to return one day to bring them to America and to get away from the abuse at home. He did create a beautiful life in Rhode Island and he did return to collect his mother 4 years later. However, his sister married and stayed in Italy. In the over 100 years, Ernesto's family grew to over 90 Italo-Americans. While in Italy, his sister, Christina's family grew to almost the same size. As many of the "elders" in my family were in their 80's, Athena, my beautiful partner and I decided to create a once-in--a-lifetime reunion. We needed lots of coordination, facilities that would accommodate 2 large receptions and a responsive staff. Right from the start, it was clear that Adriana and her team would be able to help. They were amazing. The house was better than the photos, the staff quickly became part of our family, the food was wonderful and beautiful memories were created as part of this very special trip. We brought over 20 family members from Rhode Island and about 30+ of our Italian cousins showed up for 2 separate catered events, with live music, tents, sit down meal service, bar, flowers, and translators it was beautiful. We sat outside around the pool in the beautiful private grounds of the villa. The elders, met their cousins for the first time. There were hugs, tears, laughter, dancing and true connection. Adriana, thank you...what a wonderful magical place! It was truly a once in a lifetime event. About 8 weeks after the reunion, Zia Anna, the matriarch of our Italian family passed away. She was honored at both family festas and was a beautiful woman. The last time I saw her, she was smiling, with tears in her eyes and she gave me a big hug thanking us for creating this special moment bringing the family of Christina and Ernesto together for the first time.

Just Home and missing this lovely apartment already.

Not sure what I can add to the already glowing reviews! The apartment was absolutely perfect and lived up,to the pictures. Beds really comfortable. Bathroom and kitchen very well fitted out and lacking nothing. We spent many a happy hour on the terrace watching Roman life. Fernando’s attention to detail, descriptions of the public transport, particularly the 87 bus which takes you direct to Colosseum and Piazza Navona, collection and drop off from the airport etc were much appreciated. Wonderful bakers just across the road and so many shops, restaurants, takeaways within 5 minutes walk as well as the metro station. My daughter was especially impressed by the McDonalds next door to the Metro, though maybe not our highlight ;-) We preferred the fabulous takeaway pizzas that were delicious and so cheap, and the gelato. We had great meals at La Caletta, Olio e Farine and Casali e Gasparino (next to Metro stop) . It was just wonderful to spend long days seeing the sights then come home and experience a bit of real Roman life away from the touristic part. If you don’t like big queues, it’s definitely worth paying for the “skip the line “ tours in advance for the colosseum and Vatican museums. You can do this via their websites vs traditional tour companies. We also did a “beneath the streets” tour booked with Viator which we really enjoyed. The glass lift to the top of Il Vittoriano gives fabulous views over the city. A week wasn’t long enough. We will definitely be back and stay in the apartment again. Thanks Fernando!
