Make a holiday villa in Giba your home away from home

Situated on the southern end of the island of Sardinia, Giba is a charming rural area just 10km from the coast and is home to exquisite holiday houses. Ideal for families and groups in search of a relaxing holiday, Giba holiday villas often come with great perks like a swimming pool or outdoor dining area. HomeAway has a good variety of holiday villas in Giba as well as apartments to suit all budgets and tastes. All properties are furnished to a high standard and provide the perfect base for exploring lovely southern Sardinia.

Things to do in Giba

Giba has a little bit of everything. It’s mainly a farming area that grows everything from artichokes to tomatoes, but the coast is very accessible as well. The region is also filled with the remnants of ancient civilizations in the form of ruins and nuraghi. Giba holiday accommodation puts visitors close to the action, where there are plenty of things to see and discover.

-Sea kayaking and snorkelling are lovely activities along the unspoilt south western coastline of Sardinia. Visitors staying in Giba holiday villas can easily take a day trip across Cagliari to Villasimius. There are over a dozen spotless beaches here boasting crystal clear waters. Numerous tour operators organise sea kayaking excursions in the area, and snorkelling equipment is also readily available for purchase.

-The Domus de Janas (Chamber Tombs) are known as ‘House of the Fairies’ in Sardinian, and these impressive ancient tombs date back to as far as 3500 BC. One such structure is located near Giba and is attributed to the Ozieri culture who inhabited the island nearly 5000 years ago.

-Meurra Nuraghe belong to the ancient Nuragic culture, which was unique to Sardinia and the Muerra Nuraghe is a giant stone structure located near Giba. Nuraghi are an unofficial symbol of Sardinia, as they do not exist outside of the island. It dates back to the Bronze Age and is one of several notable Nuraghi in southern Sardinia.

-Festivals are one of the highlights of travelling to Giba. These festivals are excellent opportunities to learn more about the Sardinian culture and to interact with the locals. The Artichoke Festival and the Bread Festival, held in spring and summer respectively, celebrate Giba’s agricultural heritage. Visitors can taste local breads, oils, cheeses and fruit during the multi day festivities.

-Roman ruins are present around Giba. The Romans came after the Nuragic and Ozieri cultures and they left their mark on Sardinia. There are two main sites of note that are close to a majority of holiday apartments in Giba - a Roman villa and road, and the ruins of a thermal bath.

The Weather in Giba

Like the rest of Sardinia, Giba enjoys fairly temperate climates throughout the year. The tourist season generally runs between May and October, when high temperatures hover around 25°C. August is the warmest month, with highs regularly topping 30°C. The months of July and August are the most ideal for beach and sun lovers. Not only is it warm and sunny at this time of the year, but the water temperature is quite warm as well. Visitors not looking to spend that much time in the sea will find that May, September and October offer the most pleasant outdoor temperature for a stay in a Giba holiday home.

Getting to Giba

Of the three major airports in Sardinia, Cagliari International Airport is the closest to Giba. Popular airlines like EasyJet, British Airways, Air Berlin and Luxair all operate flights to Cagliari on a regular basis, especially in the summer months. It is possible to fly direct from London or take a connecting flight from a major city in Italy (e.g. Rome, Milan, Venice, etc). Upon arrival at the airport, there are several on-demand taxi services available to travellers, as well as numerous car hire companies. Giba is approximately 58 km the airport, which equates to a scenic 50 minute drive through the Sardinian countryside.

Little gem of a place in perfect location to explore south Sardinia

5 of 5
Francesca's house is very charming, spacious and had everything we needed. Even though it is in the middle of a village, it is quiet at night and the private garden gives it a very rural feel. The location is great to explore the beaches around Chia, Sant'Antioco or the area around Iglesias. Francesca is a lovely host and made us feel very welcome.

Glorious in summer

4 of 5
This is a charming and very spacious apartment, probably best suited to warmer months –our end of March visit was just too cold, despite the addition of a couple of radiators and quilts - hence the rating. It's definitely 5-stars in summer, but probably only 2 in winter/spring. Even so, we were able to enjoy soaking up some rays on the roof terrace as the weather improved. The village itself is peaceful, rural and literally 10mins drive from the beach, and the handful of pizzerias and grocery shops are all within easy walking distance. The apartment could do with a bit more visitor information e.g. local walks, but otherwise is well supplied, especially the kitchen which has all the basics – oil, salt, sugar etc - and impeccably clean. The double bed mattress is comfortable, there are sufficient pillows, and proper shutters ensure total darkness at night. The shower pressure is decent and there is constant hot water from a good-sized tank. All in all, a great place for a very relaxing break with a very responsive and generous host who even let us keep the flat well past check-out time on our departure day. But go when it's warm!
