Make a holiday villa in Garfagnana your home away from home

Garfagnana is a place of great scenic beauty in the northern part of Tuscany, with a landscape of oak and chestnut forests, orchards, meadows, vineyards, churches and ancient villages. The large valley and mountain range lies close to the historic towns of Lucca, Pisa and Florence, but also has its own historic hotspots of castles and fortresses. In addition to its old buildings, Garfagnana's past can be glimpsed in fascinating museums. Nature and outdoor activities are the area's biggest draws with year-round active pursuits including skiing, trekking and horse riding. Driving through valley roads to discover small towns and villages perched on cliffs is another must for the holiday itinerary.

For superlative comfort and enjoyment, HomeAway has a wonderful range of holiday villas in Garfagnana situated in towns, villages and gorgeous countryside. Guests want for nothing as spacious holiday properties feature such essential amenities as televisions with satellite and cable TV, washing machines and internet access. A collection of Garfagnana holiday homes come with delightful extras such as outdoor grills, fireplaces and hot tubs. Many have their own swimming pools or use of a shared pool.

Things to do

-Outdoor activities: With so much beautiful scenery and natural splendour, Garfagnana has much to offer lovers of the great outdoors. Hikers can head out into the mountains where they’ll find long, winding and strenuous routes. There are also numerous tracks for cyclists. Meanwhile, mountaineers will love scaling some of the peaks of the Apuan Alps. The subterranean world beneath Garfagnana can be explored in the Wind Grotto, a series of stalactite and stalagmite-covered caves and grottoes under the Pania Secca mountain.

-Historic monuments: Garfagnana's landscape is dotted with a number of old castles and fortresses. In the south of Garfagnana, find the ancient Fortress of Trassilico with its splendid tower. The Verrucole Fortress that we see today dates from the 15th century and is open during the summer months. The medieval Castiglione di Garfagnana's Fortress is well worth a visit for its towers and panoramic views. Inside this walled town, you will also discover a selection of Castiglione di Garfagnana holiday homes.

-Sports: Those who love to get active on their holidays have much to look forward to all year round. There’s skiing and snow-shoeing among other snow-based activities in Passo delle Radici, Casone di Profecchia and Careggine during the winter. When the warmer weather comes there's horse riding through forests, fields and mountains. The area's artificial lakes and natural waterways are popular with fishing enthusiasts, while golfers can perfect their swing at the Garfagnana Golf Club located in Braccicorti.

-Museums: As well as natural beauty, Garfagnana shows off its cultural riches in a handful of museums. The Archaeological Museum of Territory in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana features many ancient relics from the second and third centuries BC. To see our range of rentals here, browse our page of holiday rentals in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. Inside the Natural History Museum at Orecchiella Park, visitors will find three floors of exhibits that cover many aspects of the area's natural environment. One of the most fascinating museums is the Ethnographic Museum Don Luigi Pellegrini that houses more than 200 years’ worth of tools and artisan work from Garfagnana. It is housed inside the medieval hospital of San Pellegrino.

-Family adventures: Visitors with Garfagnana holiday homes will discover fun for all the family at the area’s adventure parks. The adventure park in the forest of Buffardello offers canopy tours through the trees with routes for adults and children. Thrill seekers who like to feel the adrenalin coursing through their veins can try white-water rafting, caving and rocking climbing at Parco del Levigliese.

-Food and drink: Garfagnana is renowned for its mushrooms that are collected from wooded areas all over the region. Other specialities that you will find in the cuisine and on restaurant tables are hill country cheeses and milk from goats that graze in upland meadows and Garfagnana honey. Potato bread has been a dietary staple for years.

Weather in Garfagnana

Garfagnana benefits from a beautiful Mediterranean climate which sees dry summers and temperatures of up to 28C. Winters are also very mild, with temperatures still peaking at around 12C and less than 1 in 3 rainy days, which makes a holiday home in Pieve Fosciana a great place to escape the English winter.

Travel to Garfagnana

The most convenient way to get to holiday apartments in Garfagnana is via Lucca which is served by airports at Florence and Pisa. From Lucca, it's a picturesque drive by rental car into the valley. Public transport options are available but they are sparse. A car is needed because of the distances between some of the main towns, villages and attractions.

Spacious Villa with Beautiful View

5 of 5
Five seniors stayed at this lovely villa in Barga and we really enjoyed our stay. The villa is spacious and had everything we needed and room for all of us. The kitchen was stocked with pantry items and Charlene, the caretaker, brought us coffee, biscuits, milk, tea and wine when we checked in. There were plenty of pots & pans and dishes for cooking. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were large. We spent most of our time (when it wasn't raining) on the spacious terrace that has an amazing view. The villa is in a great location - walking distance to Old Town Barga. We enjoyed Barga, even though there is a lot of uphill walking, and the beauty of the Garfagnana. Our favorite restaurant was L'Osteria - great food and friendly staff! The re-enactment of the Battle of Barga took place while we were there and we enjoyed seeing that and taking part in the festivities. I would definitely recommend this villa for your holiday in Barga. Anthony and Charlene were always in communication and will answer any questions you have. The villa was clean and well stocked. It was unusually warm, humid and rainy when we were there and there was no air conditioning, but room fans were all we needed. The villa is in a great location to explore - we went to Lucca, Sommacolonia and the coast all within an hours drive. The only negative of this villa is that there was a musty smell in the house, which was probably enhanced because of the humid weather and the age of the home. The photos of this home are accurate - it's just as you see it. I loved it and I thank Anthony for sharing it with us. And, thanks to Charlene for the warm welcome!

Delightful Tuscan holiday

5 of 5
I have never stayed anywhere where the attention to detail was so finely observed. Steve and Denise have thought of everything to make a holiday home dream come true. They also have impeccable taste. Its a lovely area, not far from Bagni di Lucca, quiet and unspoiled.
