Holidaymakers searching for holiday rentals in Gaeta also enquired about villas in San Felice Circeo, apartments in Formia and villas in Forte dei Marmi

Make a holiday villa in Gaeta your home away from home

Gaeta is a much sought-after summer destination owing to the beauty and tranquillity of its seven beaches. It is one of the southernmost towns in Lazio, the region around Rome, and is situated between Italy’s capital and Naples. Among Gaeta’s other highlights are its historic and religious monuments, old narrow streets, shopping and dining.  As well as being a seaside resort Gaeta is also a fishing town and NATO has a naval base nearby.

HomeAway offers holiday villas in Gaeta that benefit from excellent locations near the beach and old parts of the town.  These self-catering holiday homes are equipped to cater for large families or groups of friends, with big rooms, private gardens and facilities such as dishwashers, washing machines and televisions. Some come with sea views and their own swimming pools. If looking for a Gaeta holiday apartment, tourists will not be disappointed with the generously sized rental properties available close to the sea. That said, Gaeta is 177 kilometres from Rome, so if holidaymakers are looking for apartments or villas closer to the Italian capital, they might want to consider Rieti, which is only about an hour’s drive away from its centre.

Things to do

-Beaches: Gaeta’s beaches are renowned all over Italy and every summer many Italians flock here for rest and relaxation.  The sands are white, the water clear and the facilities excellent. There are also a number of pay-to-use beaches called lidos. The nearest beach to the town is Serapo Beach.

-Historic monuments: Gaeta has a number of historic places of interest. The colossal Aragonese-Angevine Castle is believed to date from the 6th century.  As the Italian military uses the fortified complex it cannot be visited, but it’s a stunning sight nonetheless.  Among the notable ancient churches is the Church of St. Francis, believed to have been built by Italy’s patron saint in the early 13th century.

-Food and drink: Gaeta is filled with restaurants from the homely and cosy to the elegant and expensive.  Many specialize in regional dishes, which tend to feature local fish, shellfish and Gaeta olives.  There are also numerous pizzerias, and al fresco dining is the norm during the spring, summer and early autumn.

-Festivals: The town knows how to throw a good party and there are several important festivals held throughout the year.  June 2nd is the feast day of Sant'Erasmo, Gaeta’s patron saint who protects sailors and fisherman.  During the summer there are surfing contests and parties on Sant'Agostino Beach.

Weather in Gaeta

Holiday villas in Gaeta are popular throughout the year owing to the mild and favourable climate.  The summers can be very hot, though the stifling temperatures are softened by the breeze coming off the sea. The winters are mild and autumn receives the heaviest rainfall.

Travel to Gaeta

The town doesn’t have its own train station, so the nearest one to Gaeta holiday apartments is in Formia; this can easily be reached by train from Rome or Naples.  A regular bus service then runs from Formia into Gaeta.  Road connections to the town are also good, however, and the nearest airports are in Rome (120 kilometres) and Naples (80 kilometres).  Inside the town itself there is a good bus system.

Spacious, great views but noisy location

4 of 5
What's good - the Villa is well equipped with an open plan kitchen/living space opening onto a balcony and has three decent sized bedrooms providing comfortable accommodation. Great views day and night from the balcony and roof terrace. The keyholders office team were really helpful even getting our shopping done for us to be ready when they arrived. A nice beach in Formia is only 10 mins away, as is a decent supermarket for everyday shopping and a good value beachfront restaurant. Local beach iss also a great place for windsurfing (but shop around as hire prices vary a lot). Gaeta city is well worth a visit though car parking places can be tricky to find. A visit to the cliffs and grottoes Montagna Spaccata is a nice afternoon out. What's OK - Air conditioning is only in living area and does not reach bedrooms which can get very hot. A bit of general maintenance is needed here and there. The access to the roof terrace is via a spiral staircase probably not suitable for small children. Whilst the beaches are nice there are limited public areas. Most of the beaches are private and charge for an umbrella and two sunloungers at 25 Euro per day is pricey (suspect this was a non-local price so probably negotiable - we walked away). What's not so good - the main coast road runs within 3 metres of the Villa front door and the traffic noise was relentless during our stay making it difficult to sleep with windows open. We stayed in early August and there were often traffic queues going past the door even at midnight. We were also unlucky that the nearby shipyard was having concrete construction works done, which was probably exceptional but added to the noise disruption. Overall - we enjoyed our stay just a shame about the road
