Make a holiday rental property or villa in Foligno, Italy your home away from home

The Foligno region is special in Umbria as it is one of very few areas of flat land in Umbria. Surrounding Foligno, the third largest city in Umbria, the Foligno region is spread along the banks of the River Topino at the bottom of the Apennine foothills. Offering many faces, from the graceful, ancient city centre of Foligno city which is surrounded by a partial circuit of defensive walls to the lovely, peaceful countryside along the river, a Foligno holiday rental allows you to design your holiday around your own interests. Famous for its chocolate production, a Foligno apartment is perfect for those with a sweet tooth too!

Things to do on holiday in Foligno, Italy

Although the city was heavily bombed during WWII, thankfully, much of the city centre was spared. There are a whole host of fine attractions to visit in Foligno, from the Trinici Palace, the Municipal Picture Gallery and the Archaeological Museum. The impressive Piazza della Republica and the adjoining Piazza Duomo are the most attractive sights still visible in Foligno. Build in the 12th and 13th Centuries, the squares are surrounded by fresco adorned buildings like the Foligno Cathedral and beautiful Pretorio Palace. The Romanic Church of St Mary is also well worth visiting from any Foligno accommodation, and 6 kilometres from the city centre, the Abbey of Sassovivo is a wonderful medieval sceptical.

There are a surprising number of events staged in Foligno throughout the year. The largest and most exciting festivals and events are probably the Festival of St Feliciano (Foligno’s patron saint) in January, the Quintain Joust and the Segni Barocchi (a theatre and music festival), both of which are held in September, making it an exceptional month in which to take self catering Foligno accommodation for your holiday.

The Valle Umbra Sud on which Foligno stands is an area of swampy plains, rolling hills and sporadic spurs of the Apennine Mountains, making a varied and interesting terrain for walking and bird watching.

Places to visit on holiday in Foligno, Italy

The city of Foligno itself has two facades; the lively commercial centre and the delightful, treasure filled city centre, which is still partially protected by a ring of ancient defensive walls.

Trevi, a wonderful medieval town, rises up an Apennine spur, giving a Foligno villa here great views along the Valle Umbra Sud. Even if you cannot stay in the town, the Church of St Emiliano is well worth a visit from anywhere in the Foligno area.

Montefalco holds some wonderful buildings of note, especially the dominant Town Hall and the Church of St Augustine. Art lovers must make the trip to the Church of St Francis which holds some magnificent artistic treasures by the likes of Peruginoand Benozzo Gozzoli.

Weather in Foligno, Italy

Umbria has a wonderfully warm climate all year round, which makes walking holidays and art tours perfectly relaxing. Summer temperatures average over 23°C from April until October, and winters are also remarkably mild.

                                  More than a holiday home

Torre del Marchese is not just a holiday home. Its fine setting - quiet and secluded, with fine views from the terrace - and characterful building are distinctive in themselves. In addition, we particularly appreciated the owners' generosity in sharing their extensive library and irreplaceable paintings. The facilities are serviceable and presented no problems. Our three week stay allowed us to enjoy a good number of the region's treasures: beautiful hilltop towns; museums and galleries, from Roman to contemporary; good walking in the nearby Valnerian valley; and a base for longer visits, from Fabbriano's paper factory to the home of Leopardi in Recanati. And Rome just a 90 minute train ride from nearby Spoleto.

Contact and communication with/from Luxury Retreats before and during the stay was great. The house was secluded and it was just what we were looking for. Difficulty communicating with the maid. She continued to talk on and this could probably have led to misunderstandings. Garden attendant came early on check out day which is less positive. It excludes a last dip in the pool and stay in the garden. He should come after 10 am when The check- out must be made. Cleaning staff should arrive at 10 am check out day, unless otherwise agreed. It got a little stressful when they appeared earlier.
