Holidaymakers searching for holiday rentals in Fano also enquired about villas in Pergola, villas in Pesaro and apartments in Sorrento

Make a holiday villa in Fano your home away from home

The popular seaside resort of Fano in Italy’s Marche region lies on the Adriatic coast. More than 2,000 years ago this place was one of the largest Roman settlements on the Adriatic and today Roman remains can be seen in the old part of town. Historic sights and old churches are only part of Fano’s charms; there are also high quality beaches, a museum, art gallery and colourful festivals to keep the whole family entertained.

For those who want to be near the beach HomeAway has a collection of beautiful holiday villas in Fano that are a few metres from the water’s edge. These large and well-furnished properties have private gardens and terraces and most importantly sea views. There are also holiday villas situated in the countryside within a few kilometres of the sea. Fano holiday apartments are also available in both these locations and feature such essentials as towels, coffee makers and toasters. Some of the properties will consider pets. The area is one of the most attractive parts of the Adriatic coastline. Nearby is the beautiful coastal resort of Pesaro where HomeAway also has a varied selection of holiday properties.

Things to do

-Historic monuments: One of Fano’s most recognised sights is the Arco di Augusto, the Roman arch. The upper story was destroyed during a siege in the 15th century, but the rest is in good condition. Noteworthy historic buildings include the 12th-century cathedral, Malatesta Castle and the Court of Malatesta with its vaulted ceilings and religious paintings.

-Beaches: Fano consists of the old part of town and the modern beach resorts that have grown up around it. There are two beaches to take in the sun’s rays and splash in the surf: the long, pebbly Spiaggia Sassonia with its wide promenade, and the shorter, sandy stretch called Spiaggia Lido. Between these two beaches is a pleasant fishing harbour.

-Museums: Housed inside the Archaeological Museum and Art Gallery are numerous relics from the town’s Roman past including coins and pottery. Also on show are a number of important works of art by such famous Italian artists as the Baroque painter Giovanni Francesco Barbieri and Giovanni Santi, the father of Renaissance painter Raphael.

-Festivals: The town sure knows how to throw a great party. For one week during August, Fano’s streets host many cultural activities for the great Roman festival known as Fano dei Cesari. It concludes with chariot races and people parading in Roman costumes. Music lovers descend on Fano in July for the Fano Jazz by the Sea festival. The Fano Carnival is held during February and is the oldest one in Italy, dating back to 1347.

Weather in Fano

Being a seaside resort, Fano is at its busiest during the hottest months of July and August when temperatures can reach 30ºC or more. Late spring and early autumn are also good times of the year to book Fano holiday apartments as the climate is warm and dry, although there can be some rain in September. The wettest months are October, November and December.

Travel to Fano

Fano is located 40 kilometres to the north of Federico Fellini International Airport in Rimini and 50 kilometres south of Falconara's Raffaello Sanzio Airport. A railway line connects the entire Adriatic coast and there are good road connections throughout the region. Many visitors with a holiday villa in Fano rent a car for ease and the freedom to move around.

Wonderful hosts and real value for money accommodation

5 of 5
Casa Il Gelso, is named after the magnificent Mulberry tree that shades the terrace next to the house. For 6 weeks this was our home while waiting for our house purchase to complete. Spacious enough for our two dogs and us, the accommodation is on the first floor level and is comfortable and very clean. It is in an elevated position and has large doors leading onto balconies with views of the surrounding farm land. The garden is totally fenced and there are good walks along white roads in several directions and shops also within walking distance. The accommodation is well equipped with a good sized fridge and washing machine, essential for an extended stay. The air conditioning unit also gave a pleasant relief from the extraordinary hot weather experienced this year. The owners live locally and are very attentive, providing information and assistance where needed. They generously provided us with home-grown vegetable and treated us to a lovely evening in their cantina where we sampled their own wines and local foods. Casa Il Gelso is close to Senigallia and handy for the beach and is only about 20 minutes from Ancona airport. A good location to stay for striking out to the lovely hill top towns and villages around the area where there is plenty going on throughout the summer. Also we were fortunate enough to be around for the wine tasting event at Morro d’Alba and had a fantastic evening tasting wines and learning about the Lacrima grape variety. With places in short supply that will take dogs this is a very good find.

This was a perfect villa for us - two families sharing totalling 10 people. Plenty of room, large grounds and swimming pool with spectacular views. Modern furnishings and kitchens, bathrooms. Alarico the owner was a charming man and very helpful. A fantastic week!
