Situated on top of a mountain and brimming with history, what could be better than a holiday at the beautiful town of Erice in Sicily. Erice sits on the North West coast within the province of Trapani and is a great attraction for holidaymakers looking for good food and a touch of culture. Things to do on holiday to Erice, Italy

There are several beaches running along the coast of Trapani the best of which is at Marausa nine kilometres south of Trapani. The waters of the coast are blue and clear making it an ideal location for swimming and snorkelling as well as off shore fishing. A cable car operates here taking visitors from Erice down to Trapani.

With such great views from Erice this is a wonderful place to walk and cycle with far reaching views available. Holidaymakers can take a boat trip from the port at Trapani to the Italian mainland, one of the small islands such as Pantalleria off the Sardinian coast or to Tunisia. There is plenty on offer nearby for sports enthusiasts including tennis and there are golf courses just an hour’s drive away.

There are a few bars and restaurants in Erice and even more in Trapani, with couscous and fish a particular speciality in the area. There are plenty of shops in Erice and Trapani for some souvenir shopping as well as places for self catering holidaymakers to buy food and drink.

Erice has plenty of interesting places to visit including wonderful old buildings such as the 14th century Chiesa Matrice. Visitors may also like to go to the Castello di Venere located on Mount San Giuliano. Erice also has a museum dedicated to archaeological finds from the area.

A trip to Mount Etna is highly recommended with numerous coach tours on the island with jeeps taking visitors to the sulphuric peak. Alcantara gorge was formed as a result of an Etna eruption and visitors will see the impressive layers of basalt rock by climbing down the gorge.

The warmest and driest time of the year to visit Erice is generally July and August when the average high temperature is approximately 26 to 27 degrees centigrade. June and September are also warm months but September is much more susceptible to wet weather. October and November are the wettest months with an average of 95 to 98mm of rain per month.

Travel to Erice, Italy

The main airport of the region is Vincenzo Florio Airport in Trapani, which is approximately 13 kilometres from Erice. Ryanair has flights to and from the main Italian cities as well as European destinations such as Brussels, Gothenburg, London, Madrid, Paris and Venice. There is also a railway station at Trapani.

There are no highway and motorway lines in Erice, and the nearest ones are again in Trapani, which is linked to Messina by Highway 113 and to Alcamo by the branch of A29.

Spectacular views, quiet location, delightful hosts,

A joyous February week spent mostly on the terrace gazing at the truly spectacular view from this highly recommended little property. Sun, sea, mountains, birdsong: what more could you want? Wonderfully quiet spot with approachable, friendly yet discreet hosts. The little cottage has a couple of idiosyncrasies - but nothing to put us off recommending it whole-heartedly. If you stay in the off-season, though, hope for good weather (as the cottage isn't designed for spending the day) and be prepared for closures at local restaurants/shops etc. The location is excellent - a stone's through from the beautiful Zingaro Nature Reserve, a short drive to Segesta, Erice, Trapani, Palermo... oh and about 30 steps from a private turquoise plunge-pool of the med.

A fine house in a stunning location

The house is as good as advertised. Even in winter the scenery is special. Spacious, with glorious views of the sea in front and mountain behind, well clear of other properties. The parade of sheep and goats twice daily are an extra delight. The owner warned us before we booked that it could be cold and advised how to get the best out of the heating. Despite preoccupation with parents serious illness he took care to ensure we were happy with house and facilities. A great winter break with much better weather than England and no crowds at tourist venues.

We had a wonderful holiday in San Vito Lo Copo.

The property was modern, clean and very well equipped. It was very well located close to the beach and to numerous bars and restaurants. Francesco and Romina were very helpful and friendly during the process showing us around when we first arrived.
