We booked La Bicocca for the first two weeks of July 2018. We were seeking a spacious property in a mountain village setting, in a quiet location but within walking distance of shops, and basic amenities. We know the area reasonably well and decided that the village of Valderie would meet all our needs, providing we could locate the right property. We settled on la Bicocca, and on arrival we were not disappointed - far from it. The owner Patrizia, and her family are delightful. Extending the warmest of welcomes they were extremely helpful throughout our stay. The house on three floors is spacious and comfortable, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a large lounge area. It has a homely rustic feel, with mountain views to the front and rear. The large front balcony faces the village and mountains beyond. There is also a large rear patio facing La Bicocca's orchard of apple, pear and cherry trees sloping upwards from the house, again to the mountains beyond. It really is quite spectacular. Parking access can be tight for a large vehicle, so care is needed. Also there is current no WiFi, although Patrizia is looking in to this. There is however, 3G/4G in the village. Within Valdieri there is an outstanding locally renowned restaurant, a popular bar which is open all day, a quirky little pub, plus small grocer/general store, butcher, baker and pharmacy. Supermarkets are fifteen minutes away in Borgo San Dalmazzo, and the large Provincial town of Cuneo is a further ten minutes drive.
Towards the end of our second week we decided that we didn't want to leave, and happily the property was available for a further week. We had an amazingly relaxed three weeks at La Bicocca, interspersed with spectacular hill walking on the Mount Argentera massif and in the surrounding area. We very much hope to return next year.
We loved the property and would definitely stay there again and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet, picturesque place to stay. The house is nicely furnished, with lots of room and outdoor seating. The view from the house is beautiful, and the village is in walking distance, where there is a bakery, an alimentari, and also a restaurant and small bar. James and Alessandra are very welcoming and can give you advice and information about the area.
If you are a cyclist, Valdieri is a good location as long as you like to ride long and sometimes steep climbs. You can ride towards Demonte on quiet roads to reach the Colle della Lombarda and Colle Fauniera.
Although we were not on holiday for walking, I am sure that this area offers lots for hikers. There is a Lake only a few miles away called Lago della Rovina which was popular with walkers and cyclists.
All in all we had a fantastic week and the weather was hot and sunny almost every day (we stayed the first week of July).
