Make a Costa Smeralda holiday apartment your home away from home

The north of Sardinia is a popular holiday destination and the most glamorous region is the Costa Smeralda. This is where the rich and famous go, with the paparazzi hot on their heels. Of course you don’t have to be super rich to get in on the action. A Costa Smeralda holiday apartment is a great way to enjoy la dolce vita and still have some money left over for your children to inherit one day. As well as holiday apartments in Costa Smeralda, HomeAway also offers large villas that can sleep as many as 11 people. There are options to suit different budgets but all properties have been furnished with care so that you’ll feel as if you’re living the same luxurious life as the stars who come to be seen in this part of Sardinia.

Things to do

The Costa Smeralda stretches along the coast from Olbia to Palau in north-eastern Sardinia. Originally there were mainly fishing villages here, but tourism development started in 1961 under leadership of Aga Khan IV. It has since developed a reputation as a playground for the rich and famous (or infamous), with many a super yacht anchoring in the waters off towns like Porto Cervo.

-The beaches are the main reason to rent a Costa Smeralda holiday home and they are unbelievably beautiful. The coastline features about 80 bays and coves with beaches where you can swim or lie on the white sand with its pinkish tinges and try to spot celebrities. Along with the beaches come resorts and plenty of beachside bars and restaurants.

-The clear water is perfect for water sports. You can practise almost any type of water sport here, from scuba diving to windsurfing. Most resorts have equipment for hire and you’ll also find a variety of diving schools, yacht charters and similar businesses. September sees the arrival of the Sardinia Cup sailing regatta.

-Trenino Verde is a fun trip if you need a break from all the beachside action near your holiday villa in the Costa Smeralda. Running from Palau south-westward to Nulvi, near Sassari, this little green steam train takes you back in time as it sways and clacks through the wild Sardinian countryside.

-The archaeological sites near Arzachena are a must visit if you want to travel even further back in time. The Giants’ Tombs of Li Lolghi and Coddu Vecchju are among the most famous of the domos de janas in Sardinia and are megalithic burial sites carved into the rocks. Nuragic sites include the nuraghe of Albucciu and the little temple of Malchittu.

-La Maddalena a town on the largest island in the eponymous archipelago, is another trip well worth making from your holiday apartment in the Costa Smeralda. You can get there by ferry from Palau. La Maddalena has some great hiking trails and interesting historical sites. One of these is on Caprera Island, which you can reach by crossing the bridge that links it to La Maddalena town. One of the most important figures in Italian history, Giuseppe Garibaldi, lived on this island for the final years of his life and was buried here too. His house has been converted into a museum.

Weather in the Costa Smeralda

The Costa Smeralda’s climate is a sun worshipper’s dream. In summer it can be very hot, with temperatures in Olbia reaching around 31 °C. This is of course perfect beach weather. However, even in winter the days are mild, with temperatures reaching around 15 °C in ‘cold’ January. Night-time temperatures in winter can be quite chilly. The area sees winter rainfall with December being the wettest month, seeing on average just more than a week’s worth of rainy days.

Getting to the Costa Smeralda

The glamorous way to reach your Costa Smeralda holiday accommodation would be to sail in by yacht. If this is not an option, however, the easiest way to get here is to travel to Olbia first and then either by taxi, bus or rental car to your destination. You can fly into Olbia-Costa Smeralda Airport from a number of European airports. Another option is to take the ferry to Olbia from either Livorno or Genoa.

Perfect

5 of 5
Pictures on the site do not do this apartment justice, it was roomy, clean, well equipped, a really comfy mattress in the main bedroom and a very short walk to the village centre which was a real delight. San Pantaleo had many places to eat and drink and the whole place had a lovely arty, relaxed and welcoming feel about it, a great place to explore the northern part of Sardinia from. Thank you Joan for a wonderful stay in your holiday home.

Enjoyable

5 of 5
Marie has taken care to provide everything necessary for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. The cottage is cosy and welcoming with a plentiful supply of equipment and treats such as coffee pods (which my husband appreciated), nibbles, toiletries, candles and much more. The sun beds are very comfortable and the pool is great for a cool off dip. The property is located in a quiet spot but lovely beaches and the town of Arzachena are easily reached by car. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the week flew by far too quickly.
