Coreglia Antelminelli is a true hideaway in the depths of the Lucca countryside in Tuscany. The countryside in the region is absolutely stunning, littered by a handful of small, historic towns and villages, but a holiday rental in Coreglia Antelminelli genuinely is ‘off the beaten track’, worlds away from the bustle of your everyday life. Coreglia Antelminelli is a real stronghold of Tuscan tradition, and if you are looking to enjoy the best of Tuscan cuisine, lifestyles and scenery, a holiday villa in Coreglia Antelminelli is the perfect solution.

Coreglia Antelminelli is an atmospheric hillside town whose old, stone centre lies in the shadow of the imposing tower of the Church of San Marino which can be seen for many miles. Being a rural getaway, tourist facilities are thin, but you can still enjoy a luxurious holiday, eating well in the handful of great family restaurants, and shopping in the charming little shops which line the steep streets.

There is a wonderful little museum in Coreglia Antelminelli, the ‘Museo della Figurina di Gesso e dell’emigrazione’, devoted to plaster figurines! The museum is located here for a reason, the style and process were developed in the town in the 16th century, and figurines were distributed across the country. There are some magnificent artefacts, and the story of the industry is told with wonderful enthusiasm.

As with many of the towns in the Media Valle and Garfagnana regions, walking holidays are absolutely fantastic from self catering Coreglia Antelminelli accommodation. Northern Tuscany has some of the most unspoilt landscapes in the whole of Italy, with beautiful landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see, seemingly untouched by the hand of man. Forested slopes, dramatic gorges and soaring peaks make the perfect setting for walking and hiking, and the diversity of the wildlife in the area makes exploring an absolute delight.

                                                            Just Wow!

                                                            5 of 5
The photos on the Internet do not do this place justice; it is fabulous. It is also massive: 3 double bedrooms, one with twin beds, upstairs bathroom with shower rather than a bath, decent size kitchen with everything you need, and a large lounge with two sofas and a rocking chair, and a ground floor toilet with a very small bath. Minor gripe #1: the mattress in the master bedroom was very hard and lumpy - I think this has been mentioned in an earlier review too - it really needs replacing with one that has some springs! Watch out in the bathroom: we were greeted by a scorpion in the shower one morning! The grounds are amazing and huge. The pool provided welcomed me relief from the 30 degree heat. Plenty of shady spots too. We used the BBQ and the wood fired pizza oven. The oven took about 2 hours to get up to temperature and consumed a lot of wood to make 4 pizzas, but was well worth the effort, they were delicious. The area is renowned for its honey, so as you might expect there were lots and lots of bees. In the garden they were mostly active just after sundown when they appear from the grass, so beware, always wear shoes in the garden in the evening! The village is pretty remote, but there is a bar if you need that sort of thing. There are a couple of mini markets, one or two restaurants and an ATM. Minor gripe #2: the dogs in a neighbouring house which barked incessantly at night - couldn't tell which house they were in, but every house seemed to have at least one dog, with some having several kept in large cages in their gardens. Now I'm no dog-hater, and I realise that the villa owner can't do much about the neighbours' dogs, but if you are a light sleeper, like me, I suggest you invest in some good ear plugs or maybe be just drink more wine in the evening! The roads leading up to the village are very narrow and twisty, as you'd expect for mountain roads leading up to a relatively small village. Italian drivers are mad! They drive in the middle of the road and overtake on blind corners. They also tailgate and use their mobile phones. All in all a rather stressful driving experience, but we are all home in one piece. During our 10 days, we visited Pisa, got a train from Lucca to Florence (less stressful than driving), walked around Lucca, and visited a winery near Montecarlo, but most of the time was spent lounging around the villa, reading. Lots of mountain running to be had too if you like that sort of thing! A really relaxing holiday.

An amazing villa in the most stunning location

                                                            5 of 5
We spent two weeks at Villa la Penna. The villa itself is beautiful and the setting awesome. We had sole use of the ground floor and found it clean and well-equipped. Some guests might find the inter-connecting bedrooms difficult to work with but you can leave the end bedroom via French doors and get to the living areas without disturbing anyone in the second bedroom. The owner, Leonardo, is delightful and we communicated via email using Google Translate on anything that we couldn't understand. He was always available but ensured our privacy at all times. The gardens are simply delightful with the most stunning views and are various sitting areas to find sun or shade as required. The pool is small but well-situated for the sun and excellent views. This wouldn't be suitable for very young children - the pool isn't gated and the walls round the garden have a sheer drop. Coreglia Antelminelli is a charming village. Lucca, Bagni de Lucca, Montecatini, Barga, Viareggio, Forte del Marmi, Grotta de Vente and Lago de Vagli are just some of the many places worth visiting and are within reasonable distance and with some of the most beautiful drives. Restaurants are good value and of a good standard. The locals are friendly too!

                                                            4 of 5
Overall: We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Coreglia. The site and the view especially are absolutely beautiful. Event better than the pictures. The villa is very nice and has everything to make your stay pleasant. We would definitively recommend this place. Enjoyed Most: Its location, the view, and the fact that it is so quiet around there (very little circulation, no cars in the village). Enjoyed Least: Although it was mentioned (not a surprise), the fact that the bell of the nearby church (actually, a few feet from the villa) rings every hour from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM everyday was a little bit annoying at first, considering that it is so quiet apart from that. We got used to it and found it amusing at the end. Might be bothersome for someone wishing to sleep late. Surrounding Area: We really liked walking around in the small village. Again, everyday you look, the view is simply breathtaking. Nearby Events or Locales: The villa is located in Coreglia Antelminelli (just at the border of the village.) So, you are already in the village and can walk to one of three little grocery store. Yo could technically not take your car at all. Yo have to take your car to go to larger village and town. Count on 10-15 minutes to reach other villages where you will find larger stores and restaurants. Tips or Restaurants: If you are looking for a very good meal, you can go to Ristorante Buttefly, near Lucca, a 35-minute drive. The restaurant has a Michelin Star which is well deserved. Count approximately 100 Euros per person with wine. Otherwise, we cooked our food most of the time. The kitchen is not large, but has everything you need. Directions: We used a GPS and could not program it as suggested. We ended up taking smaller roads. Check In Out: Anna Maria was very nice and helpful. No problem with the check-in or check-out.
