Make a holiday apartment in Cinque Terre your home away from home

There’s a wide selection of holiday apartments and holiday homes in Cinque Terre listed on HomeAway. This region is a UNESCO site and National Park, boasting gorgeous coastal landscapes, full of rocky outcrops and verdant greenery. Set in towns that have changed little over hundreds of years, Cinque Terre apartments are normally historic buildings, often with easy access to the sea and enjoying unforgettable coastal views. To help you pick out the perfect Cinque Terre holiday home you can choose the guest facilities you need, like air-conditioning, a garden or Internet access.

Things to do

-Beaches. The dramatic coastal scenery in Cinque Terre means that the beaches are small and sheltered, usually offering pebbles or flat rocks, next to crystal clear waters. A classic sandy beach can be found at Monterosso, and here you’ll also be able to hire a sunbed and parasol. One of the more secluded beaches is located at Corniglia – it’s a long pebble beach accessibly only via a walking trail.

-Nature. One of the best reasons to visit Cinque Terre is to immerse yourself in this stunning landscape. The park has hills that rise steeply from the coast and are covered in lush vegetation. On trails here it’s fascinating to see how many generations of humans have adapted, creating wine terraces that overlook the Mediterranean and practically carving the picturesque towns in the limestone.

-Food and drink. Given the abundant olive and vine cultivation throughout Cinque Terre, it’s not surprising that olive oil and wine are important elements in local cuisine. There are six DOC wines in the area, including the dry Cinque Terre white wine. Pesto is a local speciality, made from garlic, basil, olive oil, pine nuts and pecorino cheese.

-Local sights. The five small towns in Cinque Terre are listed as one UNESCO World Heritage Site and are full of historic character. You could walk or catch the train to Monterosso to see a historic Genoese castle, or the Church of St. John dating to the 13th Century, with a beautiful fresco. Vernazza also has a castle, from the 1400s, and if you’re feeling energetic you hike the trail from here up to the beautiful Sanctuary of Madonna di Reggio.

-La Spezia. Just outside the national park, a few kilometres to the east is the city of La Spezia. There’s history here in the shape of St. George’s Castle, a Genoese stronghold from the 1200s – here you can visit a museum displaying artefacts from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Other attractions in the city include a museum devoted to the Italian navy, which has had a presence in La Spezia for more than 150 years.

Weather in Cinque Terre

Cinque Terre is located in a part of Italy with a warm temperate climate, with conditions that are typical for a Mediterranean coastal region. Rainfall is relatively frequent all year round, apart from in mid-summer. May is when temperatures begin to climb, and the weather stays warm until October, after which conditions are wetter and milder. The hottest month is July, when daily highs can rise above 30 degrees and usually don’t drop far below 20 degrees at night. The coldest month is January, with highs that peak just above ten degrees during the day.

Travel to Cinque Terre

To get to an apartment in Cinque Terre from abroad, you have choice of two airports within an hour of the area. West is Genoa (GOA), which has a number of routes from the UK, some of which are only available in summer. A bit closer and to the southeast is Pisa (PSA), which has a few more connections, mostly with low-cost providers. Cinque Terre is unique in that there’s no car traffic within the region’s towns; however, each one has a train station on the Pisa-La Spezia- Genoa line.

Neat apartment, perfect location.

5 of 5
A neat apartment in an old building in the older part of town, and a perfect location for hiking trails, beach, bars, restaurants and shops. During our stay we hiked all along the coast from Portovenere to Bonnasola, using the excellent and frequent train service to break the route into reasonable chunks and return to Levanto each night. We also hiked into the interior to visit several forgotten villages. The network of trails is vast. By the end of our stay, we loved Levanto. Relaxed, unpretentious and not too busy (not in late June at any rate). And now for a useful tip: Levanto boasts one small church which gives you a time-check every fifteen minutes, 24/7. So at, say, 04.00, the big bell will give four bongs. At 04.15, the big bell will give four bongs and the little bell one ding. At 04.30, the big bell will give four bongs and the little bell two dings. At 04.45, the big bell will give four bongs and the little bell three dings. At 05.00 - well, you can guess the rest. At 07.00, the big bell in the main church resonates with a deeper, richer tone which leaves you feeling relieved that whoever programmed its ringing mechanism had the good sense to let it rest during the hours of darkness. The first night, I thought I must be dreaming. The second, I wore earplugs. But it wouldn't discourage us from returning to Roberto's delightful apartment .
