Make a holiday rental home or villa in Cercina, Italy your home away from home

The picturesque Florentine Hills contain a number of small villages and towns, and Cercina is one of the smallest of them all. Just 14km from the spectacular city of Florence, Cercina is a hark back to old times, having once been an important cultural centre, but now content with simply being a sleepy hamlet on the outskirts of the big city. This destination is ideal for nature lovers and anyone that wants to spend a good percentage of their holiday relaxing amongst some of the regions finest scenery.

Things to do in Cercina, Italy

Cercina is a traditional Tuscan village that has maintained its old ways of doing things, and if you are looking for a slice of ‘Real Tuscany’ you will not go far wrong by staying here. Some of the best holiday experiences can be had by immersing yourself in the local culture, with a great way of doing this to do as the local’s do and buy your weekly food supplies from the village’s grocery, butchers and bakers – rather than a large, characterless supermarket.

Several walking and hiking trails start and finish in Cercina, so lovers of the outdoors will be well at home in this destination. A popular route runs almost 9km to the town of Sesto Fiorentino, and takes in a number of interesting sites along the way, including an Etruscan tomb and museum. This trail takes in some spectacular scenery, particularly from its highest peaks, and on a good day you can see Florence and beyond.

A hugely entertaining and interesting event in Cercina is the ‘Blessing of the Animals’ – where local residents take their dogs, cats and horses to be blessed by the village priest. Music and other entertainment accompany this annual celebration, and (as is commonplace with Tuscan festivals) there is plenty of local food and drink on offer.

Places to visit on holiday in Cercina, Italy

As mentioned above, the Sesto Fiorentino (9km) can be reached on foot as well as by car or bicycle, and makes for a great day trip. The town is considerably bigger than Cercina, so has more in the way of amenities and attractions, including the 11th century Pieve (Parish Church) di San Martino. Also worth a look in Sesto Fiorentino is the Park of Villa Gamba, which is the ideal place to relax on a hot summer’s day. Florence (14km), of course, should also be high up on your list of places to visit.

The average daily high temperature in Cercina during January is 10C. This then increases by 2-3 degrees every month until July – which is the warmest time to visit, with a daily average high of 30C. The temperature then cools sharply from August onwards, all the way back down to 10C in December.

Flights to Cercina, Italy

Florence Peretola Airport (FLR) is just 10km away, making it the obvious choice for getting to Cercina from the UK. You will need to book well in advance and search around for the best deals, however, as flight numbers to this destination are somewhat limited. Pisa Airport (PSA) is another option, at 107km.
