Things to do

-Beaches. Marina di Caulonia is the town’s resort, sitting next to an unbroken stretch of coarse sandy beach backed by rugged hills. It’s always possible to find a quiet spot on the waterfront here, even at the height of summer. You can head a little way up the coast to resorts like Isca Marina and Marina di Davoli for other sublime sandy beaches.

-Natural scenery. Calabria’s interior boasts impressive mountain landscapes, rivers and pine forest, home to challenging or light looped trails for hikes and bike rides, ideal in the spring and autumn. Easily reached by car is the Aspromonte National Park, which protects the southern tip of Italy’s Apennine range, and provides a habitat for species like Bonelli’s eagle.

-Food and drink. On the southern tip of Italy chilli is an important ingredient in many dishes, from pasta to stews. The fruit and vegetables produced here are also of high quality, especially aubergines, peppers and tomatoes, as well as a wide range of mushrooms in the upland Aspromonte region. Wine is also produced locally – Greco di Bianco is a famous dessert wine produced here .

-History. Caulonia Superior, the historic old town, is perched atop a promontory 300 metres above sea level, with attractive squares and a tangle of narrow streets some of which can be very steep. Nearby Gerace boasts the ruins of a Norman castle from the 11th Century, as well as a spectacular cathedral from the same time.

-Reggio di Calabria. This city is about an hour from Caulonia and well worth the drive. Here you can see the Bronzi di Riace, two life sized ancient Greek bronze sculptures discovered off the coast of Riaci Marina in the 1970s, and displayed at the Archaeological Museum since the early-80s.

Weather in Caulonia

Caulonia gets a warm Mediterranean climate – for six months of the year, from May to October, you can expect daily highs to get well above 20 degrees. June, July, August and September bring especially warm conditions; with consistently clear skies and rain only occurring later in the season in isolated bursts. Autumn and spring weather is very pleasant here, with temperatures normally hitting the mid to high-teens and clear days relatively common. Mid-winter is also very mild – in January it’s no surprise to see highs of 15 degrees.

Travel to Caulonia

The most convenient way to get to Caulonia from the UK would be to fly to Lamezia Terme International Airport (SUF), which is located 90 minutes to the north of the town. The car journey is a scenic one, following the SS106, which follows the contours of the coast and gives you great views of the mountainous countryside to the west. It’s also possible to catch a train from Lamezia Centrale Station to Caulonia Marina, which takes around two hours and is an affordable option.

A totally relaxing holiday in a wonderful apartment

5 of 5
We spent a very relaxing fortnight in this beautiful apartment. It was very clean and well equipped. The property manager was very efficient and made sure that everything was perfect for us. It was even better than we expected! The beach is a very short walk from the apartment and it was practically empty most of the time. There were very few people around but those that were there were very friendly. The two towns close by have lots of shops and plenty of places to eat at (we sometimes BBQ'd in the lovely private garden.) We'll definitely go back. Adam & Emma
