Make a holiday rental cottage or self catering villa in Catania, Sicily your home away from home

Sitting on the eastern coast of Sicily is Catania, a city which has had to fight both invaders and nature for its existence. A number of volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and invasion parties have left a remarkable mix of historical monuments whilst destroying others, giving Catania a wonderfully progressive appearance. Located between the waters of the Ionian Coast and the fiery peak of Mount Etna, Catania is surrounded by some hugely diverse landscapes, providing a perfect holiday retreat for anyone who loves nature and the great outdoors.

Things to do on holiday in Catania, Sicily

There are some beautiful historical sites to explore from a self catering Catania holiday cottage, villa or apartment. The two Roman amphitheatres are both certainly worth exploration from any Catania accommodation, especially the larger of the two, which sits above a huge maze of passages and alcoves. The most visually impressive monument you can visit from a self catering Catania villa is the huge, dominant Ursino Castle, which used to stand on the coastline until a volcanic eruption actually extended the coastline further into the sea! The Baroque 9th Century Cathedral is also well worth further investigation from any Catania accommodation.

There are some fantastically long, sandy beaches just a short walk from the very centre of the town, perfect for anyone wishing to relax in the sun with the sand between their toes. There is always plenty of space on the white sand beaches of Catania, despite the amazing climate, stunning scenery and modern water sports centres which can be found along this stretch of coast.

Walking from a Catania apartment, villa or cottage is absolutely magnificent. The Simeto Estuary which lies to the south of Catania has been declared an area of outstanding natural beauty, offering fantastic views over the volcanic landscape of Mount Etna to the west. The National Park which surrounds the volcano, the Parco dell’Etna has some breathtaking scenery to see, and you can climb the volcano, although taking expert advice on conditions before setting out from your Catania holiday cottage is strongly advised.

Throughout Catania are a host of fantastic restaurants, cafes and eateries. The fresh seafood which comes from the nearby waters of the Ionian Sea are cooked to perfection in many restaurants, and the local anchovies, aubergines and marzipan are known throughout cooking circles as some of the finest money can buy.

Places to visit on holiday in Catania, Sicily

There is a wonderfully scenic boat trip you can take from Catania to the Island of Malta. A trip to the Island of Malta makes a simply wonderful day trip from a self catering Catania holiday cottage, villa or apartment, as there is so much to see and do with a day in Malta.

Weather in Catania, Sicily

Catania is among Italy’s hottest places. During the summer months, temperatures of 40°C are not uncommon, and although this makes beach holiday in the area remarkably enjoyable, if you would like to explore from a Catania villa, late spring or early autumn are top times to visit, still being hot, but not unbearably so. Even in the grips of winter, you are very unlikely to experience temperatures under 15°C from Catania accommodation.

Cheap flights to Catania, Sicily

The Aeroporto Fontanarossa or Catania Airport (CTA) is located 7km outside of the city centre. Flights to Catania Airport are provided by easyJet, ThomsonFly and British Airways from a selection of British airports including Gatwick (LGW) and Manchester (MAN).

Absolutely fantastic.

It has all been said in other reviews but the hospitality of Santa, Tony and Marco cannot be overstated. Our 5 year old twins fell in love with them. Tony's cooking is simply genius, Santa provides, what appears to be, effortless patience and Marco is a mine of local information and good humour. I suspect we'll be back.

Really lovely traditional house

5 of 5
We had a really glorious two weeks in this lovely, characterful house. The swimming pool is wonderful, filled by the water from the well. The village of Stazzo is a five minute walk and has its own lava beach and a selection of restaurants. Slightly further afield but still walkable is Santa Tecla with more restaurants but especially a lovely fish restaurant. There are lots of interesting things to do within easy reach, Mount Etna, Taormina, Catania, Syracuse and Ortigia to name a very few. The owner of the property, Liliana lives very unobtrusively on the ground floor but is extremely helpful when necessary. She very kindly organised a boat trip for snorkelling and dolphin watching for us. On arrival she very kindly produced a delicious cake and bottle of wine.
