Things to do

-Mountain activities. You’ll be a short trip from one of Europe’s most impressive natural reserves. The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park covers a huge area and provides a haven for animals such as wolves, bears and golden eagles. There’s a great choice of remote mountain biking, hiking trails and cross-country skiing trails to discover, offering astounding panoramas.

-Food and drink. Known for its rustic cuisine, the Teramo province boasts a number of distinctive and delicious specialities. Ventricina Terama is a spiced spreadable salami produced specifically in this hilly region, while pecorino marcetto is a rural cheese with a bold flavour. Truffles, chestnuts, honey and olive oil are local products that feature heavily in cuisine here.

-Coast. The Abruzzo region has 130 kilometres of coast, home to 22 Blue Flag beaches, recognised for their cleanliness and range of amenities. And here, in the northern Teramo province, the beaches are extensive, sandy and great for kids. Easily reached is Silvi Marina, which has a long and broad beach, and is well known for its liquorice production.

-Local history. Castiglione Messer Raimondo sits on a hill amid undulating green countryside, overlooking the River Fino and with lovely mountain views to the west. The village is still partially fortified, and an interesting sight to seek out is the San Nicola di Bari church, dating to the 1700s. Penne, a short drive southeast, is a beautiful medieval town.

-Teramo. This city has a tumultuous history that stretches back to Phoenician times, and there are remnants here from a range of civilisations. From the medieval era is the Largo Melatino, a beautiful stone house dating to the 1100s. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a must-see, also dating to the 12th Century and decorated with lavish Renaissance artworks.

Weather in Castiglione Messer Raimondo

Castiglione Messer Raimondo enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with lots of warm weather from May to October. Winters though can be chilly here, as the village is so close to the Apennines and sits on relatively high ground. In January for instance, temperatures linger a few degrees above freezing. Spring conditions are normally quite damp, but temperatures rise week on week throughout the season, reaching well above 20 by May. Highs in July are normally in the mid or upper-20s, while autumn, which arrives in mid-October, is mild and damp here.

Travel to Castiglione Messer Raimondo

You can get to your apartment in Castiglione Messer Raimondo from abroad via Abruzzo Airport (PSR), which is found just outside the city of Pescara, and has low-cost links to airports in the UK. The airport is about 45 minutes from the village. Cars are recommended here; towns in this rural part of the region are connected by provincial roads, and there is an absence of major transport hubs. As well as being the focal point for air transport, Pescara, also has the closest train station and ferry terminal to Castiglione Messer Raimondo.

A Special Place

5 of 5
I fell in love with Casa Mimosa and as many have said, the photos cannot capture the beauty and magic of the property. It is in a remote section of the Teramo/Abruzzo and there are rolling hills and the magestic mountains in the back drop. you will definitely need a car to explore and to get around. the home is also quite special and is packed with a feeling that makes you settle in. among my special times were our dinner times at the patio table where conversations lasted for hours and the pool night we had will; but there were so many special moments of the land being healing and transformative. the first week there were multiple families and a total of 11 people and it was still spacious. the second week we were 4 and it felt cozy. the grounds keeper and his wife came daily in the morning. it was wonderful to have them cook some of the meals especially upon our arrival. I did travel to Cinque Terra which was quite beautiful , but the time at Casa Mimosa made my time in Italy wonderful. Thank you Jane and Sophie for have created this beautiful and healing place.

Great value hideaway

5 of 5
Lovely relaxed setting, with olive groves and fig trees aplenty surrounding a lovely pool. The accommodation is basic in terms of kitchen & bathroom etc., but for the price it still represents excellent value.
