Make a holiday rental home or villa in Castellaneta, Italy your home away from home

Located in the Taranto province of Italy, Castellaneta is a medium-sized comune which has a population of around 17,000 people. The town is perhaps most visited for its array of churches that date back over the last few centuries, but Castellaneta is also just 20km from the coast of the Ionian Sea and the Gulf of Taranto, so offers an excellent base for both a beach holiday and visits to bigger cities such as Bari and Taranto.

Things to do in Castellaneta, Italy

The centre of Castellaneta has a number of historical buildings, and if this is your forte you will be well at home visiting old attractions such as the 13th century Chiesa di San Nicole, the 15th century Chiesa di Francesco d’Assisi and the 13th century Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Lucce – the latter of which is home to a number of interesting frescoes. Castellaneta’s most famous son was the actor Rudolf Valentino, and you will find a number of buildings and businesses named in his honour as you continue your stroll around town.

If you would rather get out and about exploring the local landscape, a strong recommendation is to visit the Gravina of Castellaneta. The area is home to a number of carved caves which were once inhabited by locals, but some of which are now used as churches. The reason for the cave-dwelling was the scarcity of trees in this part of Italy, and some residents also built their homes out of rocks. Some of these layered rock structures (known as trulli) still stand, and can be seen at various points both in the town centre and the surrounding countryside.

Places to visit on holiday in Castellaneta, Italy

Castellaneta is 20km by road from the nearest town of Mottola, and this old destination makes for a great day trip. Mottola has a number of ancient churches and cathedrals, and is well-visited for its elevated position 400 metres above sea-level, which permits some stunning views from around the town. Taranto, the capital of the province of the same name, can be reached in around 45 minutes by car and boasts the best amenities in the region.

Weather in Castellaneta, Italy

Average high temperatures in January in Castellaneta are a mild 12C, and these increase by two or three degrees every month until the hottest months of July and August, which often see temperatures above 30C. If you are intent on avoiding the rainfall it is best to visit Castellaneta between April and August – though the old short shower is unavoidable whenever you visit.

Flights to Castellaneta, Italy

Taranto Airport does not receive direct flight from the UK, so the best way of getting to Castellaneta is to fly to Bari Airport (BRI), which is 69km to the south of the town. The airport (which is also known as Palese Airport), receives UK flights from British Airways and Ryanair. The use of a hire car is the best way of getting to your Castellaneta accommodation.

Perfection!

5 of 5
Wow,! We went for our familymoon (5 of us) and I had searched for a property which would be perfect for our special event and I couldn't be happier with my choice. From the moment I touched base with Alex (the owner) I knew it was going to be just right. Alex was quick to respond to emails at all times, he was efficient and friendly and gave loads of tips to make our holiday perfect. The trullo is set in beautiful surroundings, the pool is sublime - we were there in a heatwave (43 degrees) so it was very welcome and clean! There was so much space outside for our 3 children to set up dens, hideout and have fun. Alex and family have left lots of equipment to keep them entertained too. The trullo was exactly as I expected - just beautiful. There was plenty of space for us all. The roof terrace was amazing and the perfect spot to watch the thunderstorm we had (it was a long way away at the time). The security of the place was spot on too - we felt safe at all times. The wildlife was fabulous too - we had a fox by the pool, more lizards than we could count and even scorpions! Don't let that put you off as they aren't venomous and were actually a lot of fun - we had our own scorpion catching box and we researched them too! The children, aged 4, 7, 9, were catching them by the end of the fortnight! I really didn't want to return to England and could have stayed in this beautiful place forever! Thank you, Alex for the bottle of celebratory fizz on arrival too. It was enjoyed and appreciated. I can bot recommend this place highly enough.

Beautiful holiday home, amazing place to stay

5 of 5
We have had the most incredible two weeks in Puglia, staying at this fantastic property. Le Torre is a beautiful old property with so much space for the 8 of us. The rooms are well appointed and the pool and outdoor area are incredible. The pool is the largest we have ever had the fortune to use in a holiday home. The children loved exploring the gardens, relaxing on hammocks and play area. We were warmly welcomed upon our arrival and continued to be visited by Peppino ensuring our comfort and needs were met throughout our stay. Close to Mottola, it is a 30 minute walk into town or 10 minutes in a car. The house is also well located to explore this lovely region of Italy. I cannot recommend this property enough, we are sorry to leave and hope that in the future we can visit again. Thank you
