Modern self-catering in a lovely area

5 of 5
We spent almost a fortnight at Residence Toli and enjoyed it very much; we would like to have stayed longer if our schedule had permitted. The accommodation consists of two modern three storey buildings, one set behind the other, with a service corridor linking them where the site office, a lift and a washing machine (which needs a 2 euro coin) can be found. We stayed in a ground floor apartment with a double room, a twin room and a bed settee in the kitchen/diner so it therefore slept 6. The curtains were thin, but we could achieve a blackout by using the shutters. The kitchen was well equipped in continental style; this meant small cups and glasses and we had to ask for a kettle, but one was produced immediately on request. There was no conventional oven, but the microwave had a grill. The TV showed Italian and German channels and there was no DVD player, but we had taken one with us. The site is screened from the road by a hedge (the quickest way to find it is to look for the recycling bins on the pavement) but as well as parking, there is BBQ equipment, several sun loungers and childrens play items in the garden, and a table tennis table indoors. The village centre is only a few hundred yards away: the older part is to your left, and the newer part, together with access to the lake, on your right. There are various places to eat in both and the lake area also has the local Coop supermarket which sells a wide range of non-food items to assist those camping nearby. The Coop also has a multilingual cash machine and a large car park and opens daily until 8pm in high season (additionally, a Eurospin supermarket on the main road in the next village of Bezzecca sells some different items). The lake is very clean and there was a lifeguard on duty for swimmers; several types of small boats can be hired including pedaloes with slides fitted. The mountains surrounding the area, together with the lake, provide beautiful scenery and the temperature in late August/early September was at or above 30 degrees celsius most days. Most people we dealt with knew some English. We also visited Venice (the longest trip - 2.5 hours), Verona, Brescia and Trento. Be aware that most roads in the area are slow, with low speed limits and no overtaking signs common even when you're not going round a mountain. Riva del Garda is a traffic black spot and we began diverting via Arco to get to the autostrada. We had a great time and would go again.

It was lovely to swim in the lake every day and jump off the pontoon. The house though small is nice and friendly to all ages. I love the terrace and the view. (Ellie, age 7) Best feature of house the terrace facing east across the lake, completely secluded. You can eat outside even if it's raining as long as it stays warm. Galley kitchen about par for holiday house good cooker, enough storage (with a bit of rearranging). Why no lids for saucepans? A kettle would have been nice (especially for Brits) also a small sharp paring knife and some kitchen scissors. Fridge only has small freezer compartment. None of these small defects bothered us much. No Wi-Fi in house relied on smartphone for internet (reception generally OK). A DVD player would be good for rainy afternoons we brought DVDs which children watched on laptop. The owner's daughter met us and showed us round and was really friendly and helpful. The lake is very close -- ideal for our children (ages 9 and 7). Swimming is best in the morning in the afternoon the wind gets up then around early evening it calms down again. We were there in mid-August and it rained four days out of the six we were there, but we still enjoyed the lake and the fabulous view. There's a pedalo which you get to use two days (it's shared with other properties) -- but beware as it's quite heavy to haul back up onto the shore! Not much noise -- you can hear some traffic from main road but nothing to alarm a city dweller. No mosquitoes (to our surprise too high up?) and only the odd midge. We brought loads of insect repellent which went virtually unused. Access is tricky and it's not a place to pop in and out of in the car a narrow road with hairpin bends leads down to the property, but parking when you get there is no problem. Basically we stayed put and shopped locally in Ponte Caffaro. The only excursion we made was to Bagolino in the hills above us--again a bit of a hairy drive, but we are timid souls. The views from Bagolino are tremendous. Rocca d'Anfo close by looks like an interesting place to visit but we missed it because it's only open at weekends and we didn't realize till too late. It's ideal for a holiday if you want peace and quiet it wouldn't be a great base for excursions.
