Make a holiday apartment in Carloforte your home away from home

Because of its size, it may not always feel as if you’re on an island when you’re holidaying in Sardinia. If you really want to live the island life, you may want to head to the small San Pietro Island off Sardinia’s south-western coast and stay in a Carloforte holiday apartment. Accommodation in Carloforte comes in a variety of sizes, from small studio apartments for a romantic break to larger houses that can accommodate a family or group of friends. All holiday apartments in Carloforte at HomeAway are furnished to the highest standard to ensure that you’ll have a relaxing stay in this lovely seaside town.

Things to do

Carloforte is the main town and harbour on the island of San Pietro, which lies just over 4 miles off the coast of south-western Sardinia. Compared to many other Sardinian towns, Carloforte is relatively new. It was established in the 17th century. The town’s founders were a group of 30 or so families who originally came from Genoa but then resettled on Tabarka Island off the Tunisian coast to fish for coral. When the coral reserves became depleted, they moved to San Pietro Island to continue plying their trade.

-Charter a boat in Carloforte, a longstanding fishing town, to explore the beautiful coastline. You may decide to go fishing for tuna or to simply stand on deck and feel the sea breeze in your hair. Also try to make some time to visit one of the local craftsmen who build wooden boats and see how it’s done.

-Carloforte is a sailing and windsurfing Mecca. There is even a windsurfing school so that you’ll have no excuse not to try your hand at this water sport at least once.

-Hiking and rock climbing are favourite activities along the spectacular coastline of San Pietro Island. As well as the sublime beaches which attract visitors to holiday homes in Carloforte, there are high cliffs and interesting rock formations like the Columns of Carloforte that protrude from the sea. You will definitely need to bring your camera. If you prefer, you can also head inland to hike or cycle among the fields and rocky hills.

-Calasetta lies only a short ferry ride from Carloforte and is the gateway to the island of Sant’Antioco. While Sant’Antioco also has a Tabarkan heritage, archaeological evidence shows that people have been living on this island for at least seven millennia. The rugged terrain is great for outdoor activities but a trip to Sant’Antioco Island should include visits to at least some of the ancient historical sites here, including the megalithic domos de janas or ‘giant’s tombs’, the Nuragic stone towers and the remains of Phoenician, Greek and Roman settlements. There is an archaeological museum in the town of Sant’Antioco where you can learn more about these sites.

-Excellent shopping and dining is within close proximity to Carloforte holiday homes. Many of the restaurants here specialise in local cuisine and the freshest seafood, especially tuna.

Weather in Carloforte

Carloforte is hot and dry in summer, with temperatures often reaching around 32 °C. In winter things cool down to average temperatures of around 5 °C at night but daytime temperatures are mild, in the region of 15 °C in the coldest months. From September to May or June there is a good chance of rain, with November and December being the wettest months. Carloforte can also be windy, which explains why it’s such a great windsurfing destination.

Getting to Carloforte

Getting to your Carloforte holiday accommodation involves a ferry ride. You can travel in by ferry from either Calasetta or Portovesme, which is adjacent to Portoscuso. You can reach both these Calasetta and Portoscuso by bus from Cagliari. Other options include taking the train to Carbonia and then transferring to Calasetta or Portoscuso by bus or taxi, or renting a car at Cagliari International Airport and self-driving. Cagliari International Airport receives daily flights from a variety of airports in Europe.

Beautiful apartment, ideally located in Carloforte

5 of 5
The apartment was perfect for our family of four, extremely well equipped, comfortable and centrally located for the local shops and restaurants. The lovely Luciana is always on hand to offer her in depth knowledge of the island and goes out of her way to help you with anything. The beaches are all within an easy 5-15 mins drive from the town (favourites La Caletta, Cala Fico and La Punta). We wish we could have stayed for longer and will definitely return!

Large house in a great position for exploring the region

4 of 5
A house with huge rooms and high ceilings on one level. It's comfortable, with a certain lived-in, faded charm and the facilities you need are all in place. The house is in a great position on the edge of town, next to a park and the Lungomare sea - front. It's an interesting 10 minute stroll up to the centre of Sant'Antioco town. It's also easy to get out of town to explore the island and to cross the causeway to get to the wider region. You have hundreds of eating choices nearby and none disappointed us. There's a good SuperPan supermarket 3 mins walk away. Leave the house and turn left out of the gate, then walk left through the alleyway. The owner is charming and unobtrusive.
