Here next to the Tyrrhenian Sea you’ll have a wonderful range of pristine sandy beaches to choose from, with coastal and rural scenery that is nothing short of sublime. Capo Vaticano holiday homes also offer added conveniences in the form of gardens and air-conditioning, and some have luxuries like private pools.

Things to do

-Beaches. Capo Vaticano is considered one of the best destinations on Calabria’s Costa Degli Dei (Coast of the Gods), famous for its unspoiled white beaches, rock formations and hidden coves that can be reached only by foot or boat. At Capo Vaticano you’ll have a range of fantastic beaches to pick from, framed by a tall granite headland and boasting views of the Stromboli volcano out to sea.

-Boat trips. A range of charter tours are offered from nearby Tropea. You could head along the Costa Degli Dei, or set off for the Aeolian Islands and the legendary Stromboli. There are also regular trips to Sicily from Tropea. For something more local you could rent a pedal or motorboat to explore the beautiful indented shoreline around Capo Vaticano.

-Outdoor activities. If you arrive here in the cooler months of the year Capo Vaticano is an excellent base for long walks and mountain biking. The coast offers dramatic rock forms and breathtaking views, while just in from the sea the landscape becomes steep and covered with vineyards and thick, verdant woodland. In this small area alone there are more than 300 different plant species.

-Food and drink. Often used as a seasoning in local dishes is the Tropea red onion, which as the name suggests is grown exclusively on the farmland next to the coast here. Calabrian cuisine is known for its spiciness, which is down to the inclusion of the hot pepperoncino in stews and pasta dishes. Olive oil and citrus are also staples in this part of Italy.

-Reggio Calabria. One of the best reasons to make the drive down to this city on the very tip of Italy’s boot is to the see the stunning Riace Bronzes. These two ancient Greek sculptures date back 2,500 years and are housed in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia and were discovered in 1972 by a tourist on a scuba diving trip.

Weather in Capo Vaticano

Calabria is known for its hot weather, with highs well above 30 degrees in mid-summer. The warm weather arrives in Capo Vaticano as early as late-April or early-May, and lasts through to October, peaking in July and August. Rain is very scarce until autumn approaches, bringing milder temperatures that usually hover around the mid-teens. Winters are moderate, with mild days and lows at night that only rarely drop below zero. Spring conditions are pleasantly warm, with temperatures occasionally in the low 20s.

Travel to Capo Vaticano

The nearest airport to Capo Vaticano is Lamezia Terme (SUF), which is about an hour north by road. You can get there with seasonal flights from the UK via a number of budget airlines. The drive from the airport to Capo Vaticano is simple – you follow the A3 to Pizzo before taking the SS522, which is a coastal road with impressive views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. You could also get to your Capo Vaticano apartment by train and there are regular services from Lamezia Terme to the nearby towns of Ricadi or Tropea.

A brilliant start to our tour of Calibria

5 of 5
We had a lovely stay at Villa del Conte. The Studio was clean, the view towards Stromboli great, even though we saw no erruption. Tropea is great fun and the beaches great. However, more importantly the people here are wonderful. Very helpful and friendly.

Fabulous spot from which to explore tropea

5 of 5
Lovely quiet area with local restaurants and very close to the beach, right at the edge of the town. The apartment was small but well equipped and spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed. Personal touches like the water and bowl of fruit were most welcome. Pasquale was lovely and very helpful suggesting events that were taking place while we were there. A beach umbrella was very welcome.
