Camaiore is a stunning mediaeval town at the foot of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, 24km from Lucca. Although it is with a short distance of the glorious golden beaches of the Tuscan coastline, Camaiore is separated from the sea by a chain of hills, which mean that Camaiore has a wonderfully enclosed feel to it. However, if you feel like spending a lazy day on the beach from your Camaiore accommodation, the beaches are reachable in just 10 minutes by bus.

Things to do on holiday in Camaiore, Italy

The hills surrounding Camaiore are filled with little towns and valuable historical monuments which just beg to be explored. The Benedictine Abbey on the town’s outskirts and the ancient church in Pieve are among the most interesting, but it is the woodland at Lucese which house the oldest and most intriguing ruins within range of Camaiore accommodation. The historic town centre of Camaiore itself is a fantastic place to start your investigation of the region.

The wooded hills around the town are the delight of walkers and hikers from around Europe, with a maze of marked trails leading you through the various assents, gorges and hilltops in the region.

Camaiore is a cultural hotspot too. Throughout the year, concerts, theatre productions and ballets are performed in the open-air medieval amphitheatres and halls in the area. If you take the short trip to the coast from Camaiore accommodation, the fashionable beaches of the Versilia Coast can be found with ease, offering not only the change to soak in the Tuscan sun with the sand between your toes, but also try your hand at sailing, windsurfing or any number of water sports. The famous Tuscan shopping towns of Viareggio and Forte dei Marni are just a short drive too.

Lovely family holiday in comfortable farmhouse

4 of 5
We had a very relaxing and enjoyable week. Despite being early August we were lucky enough to be able to book our week starting on a Tuesday rather than the weekend. The farmhouse has a great position within the estate directly overlooking the pool and great views towards the sea. The patio is a good size and the 3 sunloungers plus deckchair designated to the house (above the sunloungers for the other houses). The main bedroom was large and

Beautiful house, beautiful village, dubious wifi, awkward parking

4 of 5
This house is lovely, tastefully decorated and furnished, fabulous old features combined with effective air conditioning and facilities. Bedrooms and bathrooms are lovely, shower powerful and hot water plentiful. Neighbours were lovely and happy to speak to us, the local restaurant simply superb. We had no problems preparing food with the facilities, the balcony a beautiful eating space. The wifi didn't work. It uses a mobile sim but the mobile signal was not strong enough to make it useful. As I needed wifi for work while I was away, this was frustrating. The village has very limited parking and this was not clear from the description. We struggled to park the car on several occasions. The road for accessing the village was single track up the side of the hills: exilerating but took its toll over the week we were there. Overall no complaints, but I wish the description had been a little more honest. We would definitely stay again.
